Rochester Over Takes Buffalo by A Snowflake

Way to go Rochester! It took awhile but for the first time this season Rochester has slipped by Buffalo by 2/10 of an inch. I've been saying it for awhile now. Don't ever count Rochester out because they are well known for their late season runs and they are on one of them right now. For those of you in Buffalo, blame it on the General of Buffalo. Ever since he dismissed his army of snowmen, or did they melt, Buffalo has been on bigger down hill slide than a skier on Mt. Everest.

It almost makes that freak October snowstorm a wasted event. Ok, really it doesn't because what ever records were set by the storm should be around for a long time but still with all that early snow it is surprising to see Buffalo in third place now. The big question is how many back and Fourths will take place between now and the end of the snow season between the city's. Once again I have to say that Syracuse in no way has this locked up and Buffalo and Rochester are slowly chipping away and the couple of inches here and there add up. Sooner or later another storm will be hitting and the stats can change in the blink of an eye so don't count any of the city's out yet. Ok, count Albany out and perhaps Binghamton is running out of time but the trophy is up for grabs for the city's taken and I think we are going to see the lead that Syracuse has get smaller and smaller.

Way to go Rochester, ZR and Jessica for overtaking Buffalo!!! Have a super day all!

Buffalo and Rochester's Snow Season Totals

I was just updating the stats and noticed a couple of things. Both Buffalo and Rochester are above last years total snowfall amounts for the year. In other words they have already had bettter (worse) season than last year with plenty of snow to go. The big question is whether they can go over thier average snowfall for the season. Early in the season I predicted that they could. Looking at their normal average snowfall up until todays date they are right on course to do so. This is the first time I believe that Rochester has caught up to their average snowfall for this time in the season. Buffalo of with the freak October snow storm they had was ahead of their average for a good part of the season but slipped behind it. They are finally right around the average to date. Syracuse is only 4.7 inches away from hitting their yearly average snow totals and when the next update comes out most likely only a couple of inches away.

A message to all the snow lovers in Buffalo like the General and Jill. You might want to get the snow dance or any other ritual you might have to bring on some snow. Rochester is really on your back now being the closest they have been all season from over taking second place. They are only 2.4 inches away from sliding into second.

I haven't seen any other predictions but the Goldensnoball.com's prediction was that most of the city's would have an above normal snowfall. So far it's looking like we still have a good chance with 3 of the city's hitting above normal and it's a long shot right now with Binghamton and Albany going above their average snowfall totals but not out of the question. Now all we need is for the rest of the cities to get moving and catch Syracuse to make this a race. Have a great day all!

The Weather Channel and Snowman's

A little summary of what took place last night with the Golden Snowball competition and the Weather Channel. Earlier in the week the weather channel contacted me about perhaps doing an interview sometime on the Abrams and Bettes show. I thought about it for about 2 seconds and said sure, it sounds like fun. Well yesterday afternoon I received a phone call from a man named Pete. A super nice guy saying they wanted to do the interview that evening. For the record I did try to pass this off to Dennis Brogan but couldn't reach him. He's use to the media and handles it well :)

Calm, cool and smooth. That's me. NOT! Knowing the show was live panic set in as soon as the phone rang at around 8:42pm. It was Pete telling me to get ready, about a minute to go. I told Pete what a sissy man I am, he laughed and the next thing I know I was talking (stuttering) with Mike Bettes and Stephanie Abrams live on the weather channel. I would of loved to gotten a lot more in about the contest but at least the weather channel knows about it now. It would be fun to hear them mention our contest when they mention our city's during the forecasts.

I mentioned to my forum members that most likely I will be saying Ummm a lot. I did that during the press conference in December when we awarded the trophy to Jeff, the man in charge of our DPW. One of my forum members said to just pause instead. I told him I would try that but if he hears a long pause, that means I probably passed out from the pressure :) The worse thing was that while I was on the phone doing the interview the call waiting was beeping like crazy. Talk about losing concentration.

The biggest screw up (and there were many) other than the heavy breathing which I will explain in a minute was be trying to mention about how we kid and razz each others city's and mentioning how someone from Buffalo made snowmans. 1 snowman + 1 snowman = 2 snowmans Yeah I'm an idiot and normally proud of it except for when it comes to national attention on one of my favorite stations, the Weather Channel. As soon as I said snowmans I just rolled my eyes. I did recover the next sentence though and said snowmen. Have I mentioned yet how attractive Stephanie is and man what a smile. Sorry, I'm wondering off a bit.

As for the heavy breathing on the show I blame that on my back. Really! It's nothing to do with my bad habit of cigarettes. I pulled my back out several days ago from shoveling some of the heavy snow that came down last week. I did send Pete an email apologizing for that and told him that I can't help it I get excited when talking about snow and the Golden Snowball award.

Ok, enough about last night and a big thanks to the Weather Channel, Stephanie, Mike and Pete for giving us a chance to explain what our contest is. In reality the weather channel is on here most of the day. I'm a little skeptical about putting a link up to the video but what the hay. For those of you who missed it last night and need a chuckle check it out at the Abrams and Bettes section on the weather channel at http://www.weather.com/aboutus/television/abramsandbettes/index.html?from=footer Just scroll down to the video section.

Also Sean Kirst from the Post Standard has a new blog now and he is looking for some feedback about the Winterfest and the Golden Snowball contest at http://blog.syracuse.com/kirst/2007/02/the_golden_snowball_and_winter.html You might of heard me mention Sean's name. No doubt he is the person most responsible for getting and keeping this contest in the news and growing. Have a super weekend all!

The Weather Channel and Golden Snowball

If you have a chance tonight check out the Abrams and Bettes show on the weather channel tonight. They are going to do a small segment on our great New York Golden Snowball contest. The show is on at 8pm Mondays - Fridays. It's a great show with a lot of live broadcasting around the US and then some.

You also may get a chance to see the sissy man snowman, me, make a fool out of myself during a telephone interview. You all know how I go into panic mode during interviews. So I will apologize now for all the ummms, stuttering and wrong answers that I give. I will however to my best to make NY proud. Unfortunately during interviews the toad in me comes out. More to come as it happens and a warm, make that a cold, snowy welcome to Goldensnowball.com for those fans of Stephanie and Mike coming from the weather channel tonight.

Syracuse Breaks the 100 Inch Mark

Who would of thought that Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo would even be close to their season snow averages this soon with the way the stats were just a couple of weeks ago. Not me! One good storm along with some lake effect has put the 3 city's on track to at least hit the average annual snowfall and maybe then some.

It's still a race and there is still a lot of time left for anything to happen for any of the cities. Like I said a couple of times, watch out for Rochester. They are showing some new snow almost every day now and it's just a matter of time when they set up just right into some decent lake effect snow. As for Buffalo, they have always been sneaky when it comes to their snow. Look what they snuck in on us all in October, 22+ inches which will be a record that will be hard for any of the cities to topple.

Don't let Syracuse's 104.3 inches of snow fool ya's into thinking it's a wrap. Wayyyy too much time left in the season and I don't think we are done with the coastal storms either yet. I'm thinking at least a couple more of them which normally benefit the south-east cities in New York but they have hung to the west more than once. If that happens Rock City could benefit by the storm and the lake effect just like Syracuse did this last one.

Greg Lavadas from the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester has an article out today about the contest at http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?Date=20070219&Category=NEWS01&ArtNo=702190332&Ref=AR

Free Snow Plowing Advertising for up North

I know what you are all thinking. Like they need any advertising at all right now up North and I am sure they have all they can handle right now. True but people are visiting another website I own and looking for plowing services. Here's the situation! Myself and my partner started up a free local coupons and savings website for Central New York. We started it up not too long ago and we noticed it has been getting some visitors, not a lot but enough to our website at www.cnydiscounts.com that are searching for snow plow services in the Fulton, Oswego area. With the situation up there with roofs and them still clearing the snow the chances are some people might be having a hard time finding someone. Anyways, We figured we would give a listing to the north country so that maybe the people coming to our site can hook up with someone in their area who has some time to get around to them.

So if anyone snow plowers, residential or commercial from up north are interested in having their business ad listed at http://www.cnydiscounts.com/snow-plowing.html at no charge for the rest of this season just go to http://www.cnydiscounts.com/internet-advertising.html and scroll down to where it says Contact and send us an email with a brief description of your business info, area's you can cover and contact information for us to post on the site. If you can offer the people some kind of discount like 5 - 10 percent off that would be great also but not necessary.

Ok, back to the Golden Snowball award. This last week has made a huge difference all around. A close race for first is slipping away but not over yet. After the 10.1 inches that Syracuse received from yesterday from some lake effect snow they jumped to a lead of over 2 feet. Now way did I imagine that would happen. Not this week anyways. Rochester remains just 5 inches away from sliding past Buffalo. I kind of expected Rochester to make some kind of charge but not a 2 day charge. Binghamton and Albany still need quite a bit but they took a huge jump after the storm. Neither are a threat yet but a couple more of those storms they could come into play.

Eric, a visitor to GSB sent an email to me about how if the snow we just received in Syracuse the last 29 days was all in one month we would of broken a monthly record that was set in January of 2004 of 78.1 inches. Eric mentioned that when he took his daughter to college on Jan 18th we only had around 12 inches give or take a little. If that's the case that means from then until Feb 16th we have received around another 86 inches or so. That's a lot of snow! There is still plenty of time even though Feb is a short month to break the Syracuse monthly record. Right now we are at 48.0 inches, only 30.2 to go for a new record. It would be interesting to see some of the other cities monthly records. Have a great weekend all!

The Snow Dance Might Need Tweaking

I just want to let you all know, especially those of you up north that the snow dance had nothing to do with all this. At least that's what my lawyer told me to say. On January 7th I did the first snow dance of the season. Remember only two are allowed in a year in order for them to work. I did th mild version of the dance. I think :( OK, I could of screwed up and went a little over board and really got into it once I started the dance but I still think it was the snow God. At least that's who my lawyer told me to blame.

The first snow dance of the year is one to bring a lot of snow fast, then some warm weather, then a lot more and so on. Since the dance for some reason we have been stuck in an Arctic air system or something with the temps probably averaging around 20 degrees if that. Maybe NYCO can figure out what went wrong with the Snow God this year my lawyer said and make it ease up just a hair. For those of you who are loving all this snow, I take full blame.

For those of you who aren't buying my story and still blaming the snow dance, I want you to know I take full responsibility. My lawyer told me to beg for forgiveness, blame it on my parents and to let everyone know I will be entering rehab as soon as I can get out of the driveway and can find a snow dance rehab in our area. To all the thousands of kids that email me begging me to do another snow dance I have to say no. For now anyways. You have had enough snow days for the time being.

Jill from Buffalo is thinking about doing a snow dance to help Buffalo pull this years Golden Snowball contest off. She better get going because Da Cuse is starting to pull away a little and Rock City is right on your back. Only 5 inches away. Who ever would of thought that when Rochester had only 44 inches at the beginning of the week. Hey, have a great day all!

I'm Whooped

Gotta love all this snow, eh. I was thinking about the people up north as my son and I were shoveling last night. Thinking of all the consecutive days that Oswego, Mexico, Fulton, Parish and the others had to shovel this white crap, oops, make that white gold. Gotta respect them for keeping up their spirits during it all. The plows came through today and did their super clean-up after the storm. You know, where they get the roads right down to the pavement and knock a little bit off the snowbanks that end up putting about 4 feet at the end of your driveway. Still, gotta love all this snow and all we can do is hope more is on the way :(

The Golden Snowball contest is getting more and more exciting as the snow falls down each time. Rochester has made a great comeback as you can see. It was only a few days ago where they were stuck at around 44 inches or so. Now they are knocking on Buffalo's door and only a couple of blocks away from knocking on Syracuse's door. It's a 3 way race now. Binghamton is trying to make a comeback and from what a little snowbird told me there just may be another storm in the works come mid next week. Binghamton and Albany normally make out pretty good from these types of storms that come up from the south, south west.

There was a lot of talk about Syracuse's totals that have come in so far on some other blogs plus a couple of emails sent. One of the discussions is at Sean's home on the web at http://www.syracuse.com/forums/kirst/ about the numbers being low. Some things to remember which was brought up on Sean's blog by one of his visitors is that when we measure we have to keep in my the blowing snow which can raise the totals.

Another good point made by a meteorologist from NOAA is to consider with a storm like this, the further south and east, and higher in elevation, the more snow you'll get. Also read what Eddie one of Sean's readers has to say at http://www.syracuse.com/kirst/weblog/ which I won't admit to because I know the Buffalonians will be pounding me tonight about the airports again. I'm kidding, pound away. The way I see it, where the airport is, it's a push. Snow up north maybe a plus, snow from the south maybe a minus ; ) It all evens out in the long run. My guess is that NOAA, the official stats will probably end up coming in at somewhere around 12 - 14 inches for the storm for Syracuse's airport. That doesn't mean that the city and the towns surrounding Syracuse didn't get what they think they got. Indeed there were some decent amts posted by snow spotters all around the city so you really were shoveling what you might of measured and thought you were shoveling. Below are some weather spotter stats from around Onondaga county:

ONONDAGA COUNTY...

CAMILLUS 21.5 642 AM 2/15
TULLY 20.5 1031 AM 2/15
MANLIUS 17.5 930 PM 2/14
CICERO 17.2 800 AM 2/15
TULLY 16.5 900 PM 2/14
CLAY 16.3 743 PM 2/14
MARCELLUS 16.0 730 PM 2/14
BREWERTON 15.5 700 AM 2/15 OFFICIAL OBSERVATION
EAST SYRACUSE 15.5 730 PM 2/14
SYRACUSE AIRPORT 13.2 1200 AM 2/15 OFFICIAL OBSERVATION
TULLY 11.7 700 AM 2/15 OFFICIAL OBSERVATION
SUNY ESF SYRACUSE 10.5 700 AM 2/15 OFFICIAL OBSERVATION

I pretty sure I saw a weather spotter's snow totals from the city of Syracuse which was a total of 17 inches. Not from the airport location. I'll post more on the storm totals for all the GSB cities as they become available from NOAA. Enjoy the day all!

Snow Angels Record Attempt Canceled

I just read on Syracuse.com that the attempt to break the world record for the most snow angels in one place has been canceled for tomorrow. From Syracuse.com News Updates!

Too much snow for snow angels

Because of all the snow, and projected wind chills in the teens, Winterfest and Syracuse school district officials postponed Thursday's attempt for a Guinness world record for most snow angels in one place. Officials are now exploring the possibility of going for the world record in late February.

NY Valentines Day Storm Updated Snow Stats

Well the new numbers are in for the Golden Snowball city's which are updated to about 5 pm give or take a little. Rochester did pretty good reporting 12.7 inches so far which brings them to a respectable total finally for the season and they are now only less than 7 inches from their averages for this time of year.

Buffalo just couldn't get it going. I was surprised along with a lot of other people seeing some of the reports of only 5 inches or so. Of course being farther west hurt them but I think most of us expected somewhere near a foot or so from this storm. No biggy and this didn't hurt them too much in the overall totals. Plus they are only around 7 inches away from their entire season totals for last year and only an inch off their normals for this time in the season.

Albany who still has a slight chance to make out the best from this storm is showing 8.8 inches of new snow. The thing with Albany is that while the storm is winding down for most of us, they still have a chance to add to their totals.

Binghamton - Look out here they come! The stats were just posted and they are checking in with a record on the day for them of 16.7 inches. Way to go Binghamton. They almost doubled their snow totals for the season in just one storm. They are still aways off their normals but who knows how many of these storms are waiting around the corner. I'm thinking more that Binghamton is gonna win this round now.

Syracuse is not showing what I expected to see. They just posted the stats for Syracuse and they are only coming in with 8.6 inches of new snowfall. I measured almost 14 inches at my house which is a pretty big difference. The weather channel mentioned something like 12 inches this afternoon in the city. With the 1 1/2 inches added this morning that brings it to around 10 inches which could be all that fell at the airport. On a good note, Syracuse has finally hit their average snowfall for the season which isn't bad considering how they started out. So to round it up here is the new snow that was just reported and added to the totals above. Have a Great Night All!

Not Storm Totals But New Snow Reported Since Last Update

Buffalo - 5.4
Syracuse - 8.6
Albany - 8.8
Rochester - 12.7
Binghamton - 16.7

Happy Snow Day All!

Happy Valentines Day also! There isn't a whole lot to report as far as new stats go because most of the snow started coming down heavy after midnight which is when the latest NOAA stats were reported. I'll post them as they come in later in the day.

So far in Syracuse there is about 10 inches of new snow on the ground. The weather channel is in town and after being up north covering the lake effect snow there I'm sure he' thinking this is nothing. It will be interesting to see who wins this round of the battle of the Golden Snowball cities. I'm thinking maybe Binghamton or maybe even Albany might sneak a victory in from this snow storm. Right now there is some intense snowfall just south east of Binghamton and if they get into that snow, the chances are they could pick up enough to beat us all for this round.

I have to admit I'm stumped on this storm. They are still calling for quite a bit more to dump on some of us. Something to do with the moisture being pulled in from the coast. If that's the case it will most likely be to the west of Syracuse. Like I said, I'm totally stumped so stay tuned and stay home if you don't have to go out because I don't think this is over so keep an eye on your local forecasts. The weather channel is also advising people to stay off the thruway and roads around the Albany area and east of there and the Mass turnpike.

PS - If anyone sees Dale Stuper, please send him to the Snowman's house with his plow. This snow is heavier than it's been :(

Heavy Snow Warning in Effect for Most of NY

Get ready to get pounded as the first major storm of the year will is just getting ready to cross into New York state. Most of the state if not all will see some snow and all of the Golden Snowball cities will most likely be getting hit pretty good including Albany and Binghamton.

Anywheres from 10 inches - 25 inches is expected between this afternoon and tomorrow night and it should be a steady snowfall with probably very few breaks in between. Check with your local forecasters because this will most likely be a major snow event. By the time the storm is over Syracuse and Buffalo should be well over their average snowfall to date amounts. Rochester, which is 20 inches below normal may be right around their average snowfall and Binghamton and Albany will be making up some lost snow with just this one snow storm.

CoasterBGM from the forum seen this storm coming together almost a week ago and gave us a heads up. Kudos to Coaster who is from Binghamton for predicting this one. That's one of the nice things about the forum at Golden Snowball is that we have some Professional meteorologists but also several students from State college and also a couple of other weather knowledgeable people that visit and keep us up to date. You can read whats going on without registering and if you would like to post it only takes a minute to register so check out the forum if you get some free time at http://goldensnowball.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=1 Most likely there will be updates throughout this storm.

On a Serious Note - Take it easy out there on the roads. There is nothing sadder than reading about a serious accident in the paper due to road conditions. Your driving a machine that weighs tons so don't expect it to do what you want it to when the roads are slippery or snow covered. Give yourself time!!! You have to warm the car up, clean it off and then you will be driving slower so leave an hour early for work if you have to. Most bosses won't get mad if you get there early. I did it once a long time ago. Of course my boss almost had a stroke to see me there early, the one who was normally running to punch the clock. On second thought take a day off tomorrow if it's nasty out and spend it with the kids. If this storm pans out to be what they are thinking it will be the chances are the kids might get a freebie tomorrow. Sorry about the lecture but I really hate reading about the serious car and snowmobile accidents and there have been too many this season. Have a great day all and keep tabs on this storm!

Buffalo Chipping Away at the Snow Lead

Buffalo continues to chip slowly away at Syracuse's lead in the Golden Snowball contest pulling within less than 6 inches from them. Not a lot to add but an inch here and there adds up while waiting for some heavy white stuff to come down. Looking at the stats, both Buffalo and Syracuse are getting closer to their averages for this time in the snow season.

A good part of New York is under a storm watch for Tuesday and Wednesday. A watch means it could happen. When you see a warning for your area that means it's pretty much gonna happen. The temperatures from what I am reading will be a deciding factor as to whether it's snow or a winter mix. As the day goes on most likely NOAA will have it narrowed down. Most likely all the GSB cities will see something from this storm if it pans out and Binghamton might have a chance to do some catching up to the top 3 cities. Stay tuned as more details come out on this storm, which I believe is the first storm of the season for the GSB city's. I could be wrong on that though ; )

Also WeatherT in the forum just posted a video he took from up North. He mentions that the snow has settled quite a bit but the video is still pretty impressive. Check it out at http://www.geocities.com/tsforecast/ Below is the storm watch from NOAA!

The Snow Angel Contest and CNN Radio

I've been listening to Pat St.Claire on CNN Radio and she has been mentioning the attempt that Syracuse will be making on February 15th to break the most snow angels record at one place. You can listen to Pat St Claire on CNN Radio at http://www.cnn.com/audio/radio/winmedia.html You might also be hearing an interview from someone locally if all goes well.

Don't forget to show up for the record breaking attempt this coming Thursday at the Frank Salanger Athletic Complex at Sunnycrest Park on Robinson Street next to Henninger High School and dress warm. More information on the event and the Syracuse winterfest events at http://syracusewinterfest.com/wacooper/BrochureTotal2007word.pdf The link will open in a PDF file.

Snow Doubt About it - Syracuse Leads Again

Syracuse managed to sled into first place again for only the second time this season. After a blustery, wind whipping day with snow falling most of the day Syracuse picked up 9.3 inches once again over takeing the king of the snow hill. It's also the biggest lead that Syracuse has had this season and the question is will they be able to hold on to it?

Steve from the forum and also from Buffalo states that the lake is pretty much frozen over and what ever isn't will most likely be by the end of the weekend. I'm not convinced that Buffalo is ready to lie down yet though. We've had some weird weather the past year or so and I think it will continue so my guess is we will still see a back and forth lead right down to the finish line. Rochester is definitely a city to be concerned about. They still haven't gotten it going like they can but they will. They continue to add up some inches and will right into Spring and beyond.

Albany??? Forget about em as far as snow goes! Kudo's to Albany though. They are sending some plows and help up to the north. No sense in all that equiptment just sitting around getting rusted. With the snow or make that lack of that Albany has had this year they could of just shoveled the roads :) Why waste the gas with the plows?

I don't know what to say about Binghamton. So far they have been the biggest disappointment and surprise this snow season and they are killing my prediction as to how the cities would end up this year. Most of my predictions were based on a couple of Nor' Easter's hitting us this season which is why I had Bingo in 3rd place. I suppose it's still a possibilty and remeber the blizzard of 93 hit on March 12 - 13 so it's really not a matter of time running out but they need to get something going just to try and keep up with the top 3 city's. Have a Great Weekend All!

Below are some snow stats just to show you how we are doing so far compared to last seasons snowfall on this date. Notice Buffalo and Rochester are some where near last seasons numbers. Syracuse is pretty far off last seasons numbers mostly becuase of the snow that fell in Syracuse in December a season ago. Binghamton and Albany are way off on their totals. What's this all mean? Beats me, I was just bored ;) Have a great weekend all!

Great Pictures of Oswego, Mexico and Other Snow Pounded Towns

There are so many unbelievable pictures of the major snow event that is going on still up in Oswego, Fulton, Mexico, Parish and a lot of other towns and cities between Syracuse and Watertown. Channel 9, WSYR has been having people send in their snow storm pictures and they have quite a few posted at their website at TV 9 Syracuse They also have some raw footage of the lake effect that has and is still pounding them. Hopefully they will get a good break soon. Albany who has a solid 6+ inches so far is sending some plows and other equipment to help out with the snow.

NYCO, whose blog keeps track of what's going on in the CNY area has a good video on the Silent Edge site showing some white out conditions in Palaski. There is a possibilty that come tonight or tomorrow that the lead might be switching again. Syracuse has picked up enough to barely slide by Buffalo by a few inches depending on how Buffalo's snow stats come in. The lake effect that has been hammering the Oswego and Fulton area's has finally drifted south enough to Syracuse and has been hanging around awhile now. No where's near as intense as it has been up north but still some good bursts of snow and a steady light snow. Hopefully it will stay to the South for awhile not to put Syracuse in the lead, but to give the North a break. They have to be past the point of exustion by now and my guess is that the snow plow drivers and tow trucks haven't been getting much sleep the last week. Have a great weekend and for you Northerners, lets hope it's a snow free weekend.

Oh, one last thing. Wish me luck on the new lottery Raffle to Riches. Lets try that mind thing where we all think winner, kind of like the Super Bowl ;) The drawing took place this morning and if you were one of the fools like me that bought a ticket, Good Luck!

One of My Favorite Winter Story's

Below is a Cute story that has been going around the internet
for a couple of years now about the weather in Good Ole New York State and is one of my favorites. It makes me wonder if someone from the south of Buffalo or the north of Syracuse isn't thinking this right now. Author unknown!

Dear Diary

August 12th - Moved to our new home in New York. It is so beautiful here. The mountains are so majestic, can hardly wait to see snow covering them.

October 14th - New York is the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves are all turned colors with shades of red and orange. Went for a ride through the beautiful mountains and saw some deer. They were so graceful. Certainly they are the most wonderful animal on earth. This must be paradise. I love it here.

November 11th - Deer season will start soon. I can't imagine anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous creature. Hope it will snow soon.

December 2nd - It snowed last night. Woke up to find everything blanketed with white snow. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. We had a snowball fight (I won) and when the snowplow came by, we had to shovel the driveway again. What a beautiful place, I love New York.

December 12th - More snow last night. I love it. The snowplow did his trick again to the driveway. I love it here in New York.

December 19th - More snow last night. I couldn't get out of the driveway to get to work. I am exhausted from shoveling. Dumb snowplow.

December 22nd - More STUPID snow last night. I've got blisters on my hands from shoveling and I think the snowplow hides around the curve and waits until I'm done shoveling the driveway. The JERK!

December 25th - Merry Christmas. More STUPID snow! If I ever get my hands on that STUPID JERK who drives the snowplow, I swear I'll kill the driver. Don't know why they don't use more salt on the roads to melt the darn ice.

December 27th - More snow fell last night. I've been inside for three days except for shoveling out the driveway after that snowplow goes through. Can't go anywhere; car's stuck in a mountain of snow. The weatherman says to expect another 10" of snow again tonight. Do you know how many shovels full of snow 10" is?

December 28th - The darned weatherman was wrong again! We got 34" of snow this time. At this rate it won't melt before the summer. The snowplow got stuck in the road and that STUPID JERK had the nerve to come to the door and ask to borrow my shovel. After I told him I had broken six shovels already shoveling all the snow he pushed into the driveway, I broke my last one over his STUPID head!

January 4th - Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get some food and on the way back a darned deer ran in front of the car and I hit it. It did about $3000.00 dollars worth of damage to the car. Those beasts should be killed. Wish the hunters would have gotten them all last November.

May 3rd - Took the car to the garage in town. Would you believe the thing is rusting out from the STUPID salt they put all over the roads.

May 10th - Moved to Florida. I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would ever live in that god forsaken state of New York.

Gotta Love New York!!!

Pictures and Videos Of Some Snow Storms

There is a pretty good conversation with some good pictures going on in the Golden Snowball forum right now. Check out the posts and pictures at http://goldensnowball.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=393 WeatherT posted some pictures that his brother in law took from New Haven. There are also some good maps and some good information about when the lake Erie freeze over and Tony has been keeping us updated on some of the totals from up north and the numbers just since Saturday blow all of our cities season totals away. This is one of the biggest snow events that I can remember. WeatheT by the way has a good site with great snow stats and info for the Fulton area. Check his site out at http://www.geocities.com/tsforecast/

New snow reports are out:

Oswego: 62"
Mexico: 57"
Parish: 54"

You can also checkout a picture of the Generals Sabre's hockey pre-game festivities and Tug Hill Tina from the Champion area came up with a phrase that I love "it's lake effecting pretty good" and it will be a keeper here at GSB. Tina also mentions she's starting to get a little battle weary from all the shoveling.

The general put together a video that I believe is from his work parking lot that is time lapsed showing some lake effect snow from February 3rd, 2007 and it's pretty cool.

Below is another video from youtube.com showing the Buffalo blizzard of 1977 which gives you an idea how bad that storm was. It's from the book written by Erno Rossi. Visit www.whitedeath.com for more information and to get your own copy of the book and extended, full length DVD by Erno Rossi.

The Snowman is a Sissy Man

Yeah, I'm slamming myself this morning. When I seen the snow bands that were the biggest I have seen this season I thought to myself, "Yes Bring it South to Us". Then as Sunday went on by I was mad that the band wasn't dropping down to Syracuse. I watched yesterday as it sat just miles away from giving us what could of been the best snowfall of the season. My anger went to jealousy as Monday turned into Monday night and the North was still getting all the snow. As I watched it last night on the Weather channel and some of the local channels I just kept saying Wow along with a few other words that I won't mention. When I woke up this morning and seen that the band is just sitting there and just dumping snow faster than a snow machine could make it I started thinking a little bit differently. I thought to myself does my back really want to deal with all that snow? My soul says Hell Yeah Bring it On, but my body is saying Don't be a fool, let them have it. So because the thought is in the back of my mind about passing on all that snow I give myself the sissy man medal for the day ; )

WeatherT who is a schooled meteorologists posted some stats and a map of some of the totals from up north which are below. The funny thing is that I expected to wake up and see that Buffalo had buried us in the snow totals because there is a lot of snow falling all around them also. Mostly some towns to the south of them which should have some decent totals to report also. The chances are that some of the people in Buffalo were expecting Syracuse to maybe pull ahead the way the lake effect was knocking on their door yesterday. Well Syracuse never opened the door and only picked up a couple of inches. Once again it still amazes me after living in the Syracuse area all my life how localized our snow bands can be. Below are some stats that WeatherT gathered up which are impressive and the scary part is that there is no sign of it letting up. Have a great day all and for those of you in the Snowbelts right now, Good Luck and stay safe.

Buffalo Adds to Their Snow Lead

Buffalo has added another 5 plus inches to their totals since the last update and snow is in the forecast for most of the Golden Snowball cities for today. Cold is an understatement to describe the conditions outside. Most of the schools in the Syracuse area are closed most likely due to the wind chill temps in the -10 to -20 degree range. Just a light snow right now in the Syracuse area but looking at the radars that could change to heavier snow if the lake effect snow keeps coming down south from the Oswego area.

The weather channel has been reporting from Oswego which is on it's way to picking up probably at least a couple of feet of snow. If your home it's worth watching because the reporter from the Weather Channel has been mentioning a lot of stats and so on. The Tug Hill and Watertown area got pounded and it will be interesting to see the snow totals from that area. I talked to my cousins wife Connie who lives in the Watertown area and she said they got a ton of snow yesterday morning and that was only round one and another round of snow was going to hit them again. I figured her 3 little ones would be having a blast in the snow but she said it was over their heads and I think she was afraid to let them out because she might lose them. That's a lot of snow. Tug Hill Tina from the forum said that they were getting quite a bit of snow and unfortunately she is having some battery problems other wise we would probably get a few good pictures from her.

It looks like Rochester is on the same path as Syracuse is for the lake effect snow. Looking west towards Buffalo it looks like lake Erie is starting to fire up just south of Dunkirk so today should be a snow filled one. Stay safe, dress warm and have a great day all!

Happy Super Bowl Sunday

Buffalo Slips into First - Happy super bowl Sunday all and to Buffalo, Happy Super Snow Bowl Sunday! Buffalo has slid past Syracuse and inched it's way back into the lead showing 3.4 inches of new snow so far compared to just a trace for Syracuse. I woke up in the wee hours this morning and took a peak at the radar. Wow was the word that came to mind looking at 2 huge snow bands that were stalled up north of Syracuse and one South of Buffalo. My guess is there are going to be some big numbers posted for the towns that the lake effect snow was settled over. Watertown or just north of them should be one of them. I've seen reports where some of the usual snow band cities could be receiving a few feet and maybe over 5 feet of snow by or thru Monday. Check your local forecasts and you can check out http://www.weather.gov/view/prodsByState.php?state=ny&prodtype=warnings for any current warnings and advisories.

My team, the Eagle's didn't make it to the Super Bowl so I am rooting for me once again this year to win. Last year I asked everyone to think of 2 numbers. To really concentrate on 2 numbers that I posted here. Believe it or not it worked. So this year I will once again ask for everyone who doesn't have their own office pool numbers of course to think of 2 numbers again. We have a friendly little family super bowl board. Ya know, we just play for match sticks. Anyways, this years numbers to think about and concentrate on especially at the end of each quarter, half time and the end of the game are 9 - 7. So lets see if maybe with a lot of people thinking of those 2 number we can decide the outcome of the quarters. Maybe we are on to something. Hey if this works we can all concentrate on world peace and see if we can make that work too ;)

Have a great football day all, keep an eye on the road conditions and stay safe! Remember, Snow Means Slow!

Snow For All the Cities

All of the cities including our state capital picked up a little bit of snow yesterday. Yup, Albany even picked up 2.2 inches of the white fluffy stuff. Binghamton better get moving because it would be pretty embarrassing to be at the bottom under Albany at the end of the season. Bingo did manage to pick up 2.3 inches yesterday though and won the round for a change. Rochester surprisingly was the loser yesterday picking up just 1 inch. Buffalo grabbed 1.4 and Syracuse added another 2.1 inches of new snow.

Looking at the radars all of the snow is hanging up north so most likely not a lot of anything going on for any of the Golden Snowball cities most of the day. Of course we know how the weather can change rather quickly in NY so keep an eye on it.

Happy Groundhog Day - Phil Sees No Shadow

From the AP: Phil the groundhog, one of the most popular forecasters of all time, didn't see his shadow today. For those of you who aren't aware of Phil. He is a groundhog that that predicts whether spring will come early or whether winter will last another 6 weeks. This year Phil didn't see his shadow which means put away the winter jackets and break out the baseball gloves. Unless you are in the Tug Hill area where the snow probably won't melt until sometime in July.

This is the first time in something like 7 - 8 years since Phil hasn't seen his shadow. Most of the time he does. With what's in the forecast for the next several days it's hard to even think about Spring coming early this year. We will have to keep an eye on the weather the next couple of months and see how Phil's forecast pans out this year.

Jill posted a link here that shows a great view of lake effect coming into the Buffalo area which is awesome. It's at buffalorising.com and the link is http://www.buffalorising.com/city/archives/2007/01/snow_storm_a_gords_eye_vi.php#more Thanks for the link Jill! Awesome pictures.

Syracuse might be in the lead right now but I'm seeing a lot of forecasts that seem to think Buffalo is going to make out the next several days. Right now there is a lot of stuff going on weather wise with warm air coming up from the south and then westernly winds and so on. Obviously you can tell I'm not a weatherman when I use the word "Stuff". That said there is a good chance if Buffalo has it's snow shield down they might be able to sled past Syracuse when the cold front come through and from what I have been reading it could be the coldest weather of the season so far. Good Luck Buffalo in this next round!
