The Oracle's Golden Snowball 2007 - 2008 Winter Prediction

Cold and Snow and a lot of it!!! After the the big snow bust for all of the Golden Snowball city's yesterday I'm not as confident of my winter predictions but I'm going to stick with them. The deer are big again but the color on the caterpillars was light. I mentioned in another post that for whatever reason I haven't been able to warm up this season. Some forecasters are predicting a warmer US this winter except for in the Northeast. I Think I am going to agree with them.

So if the deer are fat that means a rough winter. At least that's what I have been told by Syracuse's very own Dennis Brogan whose done it all including contributing to a book named "WINNING WITHOUT COMPROMISING YOURSELF", stared in a movie, was the Dome ranger and the list goes on and on. Anyways after talking to my brother-in-law Buz, said the deer are pretty big this season which could mean a tough winter ahead. Not like he ever gets one but his sister Deb normally gets a couple of them ; )

A woman walking by the house as I was raking on Sunday kind of threw a con into my predictions for this season though. She told me that the orange stripe on the caterpillars were light this summer and she informed me that it means that a mild winter is ahead of us. For whatever reason I wanted to ask her if caterpillars shed their fur like animals do but I don't know her well enough. I'll have to do more research though on the color of a caterpillars orange stripe playing a part in predicting our winters before I buy it.

I'm looking at how the summer went and thinking we are still kind of in the same pattern. Mostly when it came time to golf my 9 holes on Friday nights a thunderstorm almost always seemed to pop up like clock work every week. The nice weekends were great and plentiful in NY for a change but when it came down it did come down. It didn't last long but at times it was tense even if it was a pretty dry summer. Add all the scientific stuff I add to this forecast each year which I won't get into because it's probably too boring and over most peoples heads, OK, even mine and I think were in for a snowy season for the remainder of 2007 and most of the 2008 snow season. My winter outlook for 2007 - 2008 is cold and snowy but I think we will see several days, maybe more than normal where it will seem like Spring just when we think we can't take the cold anymore.

The Golden Snowball City snow predictions are:

Syracuse -151 inches
Buffalo - 123 inches
Rochester - 121 inches
Binghamton - 106 inches
Albany - 72 inches

A side note is that even though I have Syracuse winning by almost 30 inches this season an upset would not surprise me at all. A new winner is due and I think this may be the season. Have a Great and More Importantly Safe Snowy Season Everyone and please drive carefully and remember "you see snow, drive slow".

New York Webcams and Snowfall

I'm not sure if everyone is aware of all the webcams in New York but there are quite a few of them and they are great for keeping up on the weather. I just checked one out in the Tug Hill Plateau area and all I can say to those who snowmobile it rev up those engines. You might be using them this weekend. Over a foot of snow is expected in the Tug Hill area I think from now until tomorrow evening. Tina from the forum says it's coming down as I type. Check out the cam at http://www.northernchateau.com/webcam.html and you can see quite a bit has fallen so far.

Below are some ore web cams in the NY area and worth checking out to see if it's snowing or not. One is from one of our forum members CNYWeather's house and he has live streaming video on his site which he is still tweaking so bear with him as he fine tunes it. Tony, his real name is from the West Moreland area and he also has a 24 hour time lapse video which is pretty cool. You can check out the weather at http://www.cnyweather.com/webcam.php and give the live cam a shot to see if it's working at http://www.cnyweather.com/livecam.php . The rest of the webcams are below which were posted by ZR800 and CNYweather from the forum. Some are streaming live and some are still frames which are updated frequently.

Snow wise not a whole lot is going on with the Golden Snowball cities Yet. Binghamton continues to hold onto the lead and a narrow one at that. I think by the end of this weekend maybe sooner we will see a new leader. Buffalo????? Have a great day all!

Breaking News about The General

I was checking out some sites looking for some snow pictures and I came across one that caught my attention. Not a snow picture or anything like that. It's a picture of our own favorite General Steve. A cute picture no doubt with Stevo holding a fish but it's what he is wearing that caught my attention more than his catch of the day. At first glance I didn't even notice it but then it caught my eye. Buffalo Steve is wearing an SU shirt. A Syracuse shirt. Is that even allowed in Buffalo after being spanked 4 years in a row in the Golden Snowball contest by Syracuse. All I can say is that I hope there aren't any pictures of me in a Buffalo Bills shirt around from the past. All in fun of course and it's nice to see Steve is a Syracuse fan

For all you snow forecasters out there I wanted to let you know that there is a contest going on at . Below is the info on the contest. Unfortunately Syracuse and their fake lake effect snow isn't in the contest but it still sounds like a fun contest and The General finished first in the Rookie class last year.

The Snowman is a Sissy Man

I don't know what it is about this season but for whatever reason I cannot seem to get warm. I think I turned into a sissy man, not that I wasn't always one but for whatever reason I'm noticing that it's cold outside this year. In the 46 years that I have lived here I don't think I have paid much attention to the cold like I am right now. Hopefully it's just a phase I am going through and it won't last the whole season.

I'm doing my normal get ready for Winter rituals. Just wear a sweatshirt and not a coat until it really gets cold out ritual. Kind of like trying to build up my tolerance for the really freezing weather. One thing different this year and it could be what's throwing my body off is that I did stop wearing my sandals earlier than normal. Only for the fact that a leather strap broke on one of them. Maybe that is why I can't seem to get warm this season :(

On the snow front Syracuse moved a bit closer to regaining the lead from Binghamton. Only .8 inches of new snow which surprised me because it seemed like we received close to a couple of inches the last couple of days, at least where I live which is just SE of the airport. Must be that the snow wasn't falling toward the North. Mike Murphy is saying the same thing about Binghamton. He was expecting the totals to go up because of the snow he was getting where he lives and just a trace was reported. I suppose it comes out to sometimes we benefit from the location of the snow measurements and other times we don't and this was one of those times. I wouldn't be surprised though if a correction comes out for the Bingo area only for the fact that one of the times I checked the NOAA stats for them there was a MM which I believe means that the stats weren't reported at that time when I checked. Something I don't see to often so hang in there Binghamton, maybe they will make an update. The big question is what is Buffalo waiting for this year? They are at a stand still right now. Have a great weekend all!

Happy Thanksgiving All

I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours. I hope everyone has plenty to be thankful for and that it continues to be that way for you and your family. Why is Thanksgiving celebrated? That's a good question for one of my favorite sources for information, wikipedia and you can read about it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving .

It's time for the Golden Snowball websites shameless plug. Oh Paleease, I only do about two or three of these a year and the next few days are when some of the biggest sales happen. The chances are that I'll be sleeping in tomorrow so I figure I'll throw up some links before I head out to visit with family and friends. Black Friday is tomorrow and what they now call Cyber Monday is on the 26th this shopping season. According to Walmart who I am an affiliate with black friday is indeed their biggest sales day of the year and the next two weeks is their busiest shopping period so if someone tells you different they are wrong.

I have relationships with over 100 merchants online and they send special offers to put on our websites and right now my email box is full with coupons. I figure I'll add Walmart specials here for our visitors and I'll update this post as they come in. Enough said and for those of you who shop online, enjoy. One thing to note is that stuff sells faster than you can add it to your shopping cart. Walmart sent me a list of online specials for today only, Thanksgiving and the link is below. Don't forget the free shipping to store that they have now.

Have a GREAT Thanksgiving Day Everyone!

Binghamton Takes the Lead

Man, talk about getting caught sleeping on the job. It took a wake up call (email) from Mike, a visitor to the site to let me know that Binghamton picked up some snow over the last 24 hours that I didn't catch. Way to go Bingo on adding another 2.7 inches to your season totals and bumping Syracuse out of the lead and better yet Buffalo drops down to 3rd place. They actually have a snow base of a couple of inches which is pretty impressive also.

Binghamton is also the only golden snowball city to be over their average for this time of the year. I've been racking my brain trying to predict a winner for this season between Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse and now I have to throw Binghamton into the equation :( They have won the trophy in the past so it's not out of the question. If Albany ever wins the contest I don't want to hear a word from anyone about there not being some kind of climate change taking place. Not to worry, that will never happen. Thanks again Mike for the heads up and keeping me honest. Umm, and no I didn't do it on purpose :) Have a great day (night) everyone...

The First Lead Change of The Season

The defending champs, Syracuse has taken over the lead from Buffalo by just over an inch. What a difference a year makes. Last season no one was even close to Buffalo for a good part of the snowfall season because of their October storm which dumped 2 feet of snow on them. That's one of the reasons I am liking the way the contest has started off this year so far. Look for many more lead changes in the next several months in my opinion.

It's Buffalo by A Snowflake

Buffalo managed to hang onto the lead for yesterday BUT! Looking out the window right now and watching it come down last night there may be a new leader when NOAA puts out their later day stats. Syracuse is showing 2.1 inches for yesterday and more fell overnight. My guess is that Syracuse has probably picked up 3 - 5 inches so far but it's just a guess. Binghamton is the first to strike when it comes to records this season. They tied their previous daily total for Nov 16th picking up 1.8 inches which ties a record set in 1999. I really think this will season will see a lot of lead changes which should make the contest a blast this season.

I was reading Sean Kirst's blog at http://blog.syracuse.com/kirst/ and Sean mentioned that meteorologists in the US and Canada said that the 140 inches of snow Syracuse received last winter made DaCuse the snowiest big city in North America. It will be interesting to see how it goes this season.

On anther note, NYCO mentioned that the Snow God isn't where she stores it each year. Lets see. The snow God is missing and so is the General from Buffalo. If the snow God happens to show up in Buffalo I think the General might be a suspect and he might want to turn himself in right now. I wonder if NYCO at http://www.twentyfour01.com/nyco/ would be willing to give up the snow God to the winning city for a season if someone ever beats Syracuse. Kind of like the awarding of the trophy and the Snow God to the winner :) Nah aand I don't blame her. We need it here.

With that all said, please wish my oldest son Good Luck as he is taking the civil service test as I type. He will be finishing up college in the near future and wants to become a police officer and needs to do good on this test. Hopefully he will be able to get into a local force and not end up leaving the Syracuse area. He's hoping to get in the Manlius Police Dept which he really liked when he interned with them this summer. He really enjoyed the officers and other people there. Good Luck Shane! Have a Super weekend all!

The First Snowfall in Syracuse

Just a quick nightly add-on to this mornings post. I was wondering how Rochester and Syracuse was going to do today but unfortunately Rochesters reports haven't been updated. When I checked the others I was totally surprised to see that Binghamton is now only 0.1 inches away from tying Buffalo at and 0.2 inches away from taking the lead over from them. As for those of us in Syracuse, only .4 inches being reported so far but that will change come tomorrow.

Enough about the snowfall for now. The big question is where has General Steve been lately?

Morning post:

The white gold has finally begun to fall from the sky in Syracuse and most likely in Rochester also. Not a whole bunch of it but who cares? It's snowing and it's the first snowfall of the season for those of us in the Syracuse area. I say it every year and no reason to stop now. Doesn't it always bring out the kid in you when you see the first snowfall of the season? For some reason I have a craving for some hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies. It must be a hidden memory from when I was a little kid. Ok I added the chocolate chip cookies just because they sound good right now but no doubt snow and hot chocolate go hand in hand. Hopefully by the end of the day 4 out of the 5 GSB cities will be on the snow board.

I'm looking at the radars it looks like the lake effect machines are just tuning up for the winter and it will probably be off and on for the next day or so for some of the Golden Snowball cities. Look for some official stats to be posted later once NOAA updates the totals. Right now Buffalo leads and even Binghamton is beating Syracuse and the other cities. This will be a close race throughout the snow season and I'm looking forward to having some fun with it again this year. Sort of. Well kind of. Jeesh, is it that time already???? I haven't even gotten to the leaves yet and they are half covered now with snow. I think we all know that the snow most likely won't be around for long and there will be a few more nice days when we all get out and rake up what's left before the real winter weather sets in so there is no sense stressing about it. Of course my neighbors probably stress more about my yard than I do :)

Looking at the snow statistics above all of the GSB cities are below their average snowfall for this time into the season but that will change most likely sooner than later. Look for the Snow Oracles (Oracle is the name Sean Kirst calls me and yes it goes to my head)2007 - 2008 winter outlook and winning city predictions this weekend and have a great weekend all!

Binghamton Gets Snow

Binghamton strikes second in this years Golden Snowball contest picking up just under half an inch of snow. Yeah I know it's not much but at least they are on the board and right behind Buffalo. Last season with Buffalo picking up so much snow in the beginning it made for a boring start to the contest. This season hopefully it will be a back and forth leader though out the winter to keep the contest interesting.

There isn't much in the forecast snow wise other than maybe a little here and there today. Temps are expected to hit the 50's again at the beginning of the week for a few days and then go downhill from there. The average temperature for this time of the year should be right around 50 degrees so enjoy the nice days when we get them. Their number is limited now without a doubt.

I'm off to watch the SU - USF football game. Don't ask me why. I guess I'm just a die-hard fan no matter whether they are winning or losing. That said I'm glad the SU basketball team has finally started the 2007 - 2008 season off. It's more fun when your team is winning. Go Syracuse and have a Great weekend everyone!

Snow Statistics Up To Date

The snow chart above should be all up to date now. The thing that stands out the most is Buffalo's totals from this season to last. They are 2 feet below last seasons obviously because of the freak October storm they had last year. Other than that all the cities except for Buffalo is behind their average snowfall for this time in the year. Of course it's just the start of the snow season and that can change in a second.

Another stat that stands out is that Binghamton, Syracuse, Rochester and Albany are right on track to starting the season off like we all did last year. Maybe we will be lucky again this season and not have to deal with much snow until after the new year. Nah, that's not going to happen. I think the start of the 2007 - 2008 season will end up blowing away last years start.

The last stat that stands out is that Binghamton for whatever reason has the highest average snow total for this time of year at 2.2. Something that just stands out IMO because it being the farthest south city in the contest.

I see that General Steve from Buffalo has made his predictions so I better start thinking about my predictions soon. Have a Great day all!

Buffalo Strikes First!

As usual with the contest, Buffalo has racked up the first measurable snow of the young season, 2.5 inches to be exact. It's a start, but not as comfy as that 22 inch lead we had last year.

The higher elevations south of Buffalo saw a good 5-10 inches of heavy wet snow. A few lightly scattered power outages from the snow and gusty winds. A few waterspouts seen over Lake Erie, and the rumble of thunder being heard now and then throughout the day.

Haven't heard any reports from the tug hill area wondering if they got only rain, or if the snowfall just didn't add up to anything.

The first burst of snow/hail was probably the most interesting of the whole storm. Dead quiet, no wind and the thunder begins to do that deep shallow rumble for a minute or two. Then the winds suddenly pick up and start howling, followed by a whiteout of snow and hail that lasts for about 15 minutes.

We will have to wait and see how long Buffalo can hold off the coming onslaught of snow we all know Syracuse will soon start to bring to the stat board.

2007-2008 Predictions

Well I do enjoy tooting my horn as the NE.Wx snowfall guesstimator Rookie Of The Year last year and for (well in my opinion), "nailing" two of the five GSB cities I made predictions for last season. As the snow looks to start flying this week, I'll issue my totally unreliable and more then likely way off predictions for this season.

Here are my predictions vs actual for last year. Use your own judgement as to take stock in my predictions or to know better then trusting me.

Albany - 70 - 45.9 - (+34.4%)
Bingo - 95 - 78.6 - (+17.3%)
Buffalo - 120 - 88.9 - (+25.9%)
Rochester - 105 - 107.2 - (-2.1%)
Syracuse - 140 - 140.2 - (-0.1%)

Let's see here.... My 07-08 GBS Predictions:
Albany - 65
Bingo - 85
Buffalo - 105
Rochester - 95
Syracuse - 125

Yes I hate to give Syracuse the win AGAIN, but it's hard to bet against Syracuse losing this contest.

NOW!!! Onto some good news (well good news for some of us), the lake effect machine looks to get going for the first time this season. While it looks like mainly a rain/thunderstorm event right now, wet flakes will be flying for Buffalo, and Rochester and could drop a trace to a few tenths, meanwhile Syracuse has the chance to maybe see a an inch as the bands do their dance to the south and the air gets a bit cooler. The higher elevations south of Buffalo, and the Tug Hill, stand the best chance for some snow this week, with 3-6inches likely, and maybe a few isolated 6inch+ reports. Of course who really knows what will happen, I remember hearing a forecast just like this last year for a rain event, and the next day we had two feet of snow, SO.....

Hopefully everyone is ready to officially start another season, and is ready to deal with what mother nature has to offer. I'll extend an invitation to any lurkers on the main page to stop by the forum boards here and join the rest of us in more detailed conversation about the happenings weather wise across upstate New York.

Spring Ahead Fall Behind

Depressing or what??? It's time to set the clocks back an hour tonight and for some reason it depresses me because I know whats coming our way soon. Most likely it will be getting darker an hour earlier too. Hey, you heard that first here! No one else is dumb enough to make that comment :) Don't forget to change your batteries in your smoke and fire alarms like the fire dept. recommends because it's easy to remember each year by doing it when you set the clocks back.

I still need to get all the stats in the chart at the top in order which will be done in the next few days. I'll also be adding the new poll questions soon. Last season's questions were who would win the GSB contest and should the Syracuse Winterfest be named the Golden Snowball Festival. For some unknown reason Syracuse cleaned up in the first poll question winning 76% of the votes. The poll is of course unscientific but it will be interesting to see what the results will be this season. I'm not putting my money on DaCuse this winter.

As for the winterfest question, that was a close one with the yeses barely winning by 33 votes. Maybe we will have to ask Mrs Mahoney and Mr Magnarelli which way they would vote before we cast a vote for them come this Tuesdays election. It would be interesting just to hear what they have to say yet alone find out if they even heard of the contest. JMO of course! Last years poll results can be seen at http://www.goldensnowball.com/2006-2007-poll.htm If anyone has any suggestions as to what to poll this season just reply to this post and it will be considered.

Look for a couple of changes this season at the website. One of them is that We may be having another person help out with the daily blogging duties and the chances are it will be The General who is well know here at Goldensnowball.com and is from the Buffalo area. People have been begging for me to let someone else blog because of how boring I am so I finally gave in. The General, rel name Steve will liven things up with his normal forecasts that are way off, fun snowman pictures decapitating Syracuse snowmen heads and more :) Ok in reality I have been thinking about doing this the last year or so and finally figured out a way to do it and it should be a lot of fun getting another cities perspective on the contest. Who knows, maybe it will bring Buffalo a little luck too. Ok, Enough said and have a great end of the weekend all!

2006 - 2007 Season Wrap Up Part 2

I thought I said I would write about the 2006 - 2007 snow season part 2 wrap up the next day. Come on, I only missed by a Season (summer) Umm, Where did I leave off???

Around March 5th and 6th Syracuse finally hit their average yearly snow totals which after the way the season started might of surprised some people that they would even hit by the end of the season. Rochester also hit their average on March 19th just a few days before Spring. We got a mix of everything in March including some long awaited warmer days. Of course St. Patty's day was a typical cold and windy day.

I think the big news was that Syracuse's basketball team got ^&%%*$% by the NCAA committee but that was then and I'm over it now. NOT!!! Other than that it was pretty much a typical month of March in good Ole CNY.

April brought a mix of everything also including snow on the ground for Easter if my memory serves me right. Eric sent in a good picture from Easter at

http://goldensnowball.com/uploaded_images/erics-easter-snowman-(2)-710820.jpg

I thought Buffalo and Binghamton might of been able to at least pull off their averages but both just missed unless NOAA updated last seasons stats. I'll check on that tomorrow. Sure I will :) As for Albany??? Enough said! About a half a foot of snow fell on some of the Golden Snowball cities between the 15th and 16th of April and by this time even the Oracle was ready to say uncle. Enough was enough already. Pretty much after that things started to go uphill weather wise and my posts started to slack off which mean only one thing. Warm weather was ahead and that it was.

I hope everyone had a super summer and with the decent mix of weather most likely you did. I personally like the 70 degree temperatures and this summer there was something for everyone including mild temperatures and the hot temperatures. Most of the weekends were perfect and rain free. I think I just heard that this October is one of the warmest on record. It will be interesting to see how the 2007 - 2008 snow season turns out. With that said I'll be updating the site and stats in preparation for the new season in the coming days!

LET the 2007 - 2008 SNOW SEASON BEGIN!
(April would be a good begin date for me)
