Just a heads up that it's getting close to that time love it or hate it. I'm going to be switching over to wordpress if everything goes right and once the new design is ready it will be back to www.goldensnowball.com . Hopefully I don't wipe the entire site and posts out from the last several years while trying to change it over.

I think we can do a little more with the site and snow contest using wordpress rather than blogger. A lot will still be the same like posting comments and so on but hopefully some extras like having you who visit being able to upload some snow pictures and a more visitor friendly site for all of us. Keeping my fingers crossed that even though I have the blogger backed up that I don't lose everything.

Halloween Costumes Means Snows Coming

I'm trying to think how last Halloween was here in Central New York. It almost always seems to be a little bit cold with a light drizzle don't it. Of course every now and then we get a decent Halloween night for the kids to do their trick or treating on. Let's hope it's that way this Halloween.

OK, now for another shameless plug of my sites that sell Halloween costumes. I came up with several this year and tried to break them down to individuals. Football, Bowling Balls and Snow

Just a quick hello to anyone that still stops here every now and then. The last couple of days has had me thinking about the contest once again. With SU starting and winning the first football game of the season along with the cool rainy couple of days I think we all know that summer is coming to an end. Hopefully plenty of nice weather is still in the forecast before that naughty S word gets mentioned :). What a comeback game it was too. Way to go Syracuse and let’s keep that never give up spirit going all season long.

Shot In The Dark Forecasts: Winter 2011 Wrap Up

Yes, I know, it's the end of May, not really time to be thinking about snow right now. That's why now is the perfect time to have the SITD Wrap Up!

Up first is the April forecast, which involved rankings for the five GSB cities. Below are the rankings as of the end of April, with the range I had given them in parenthesis.

Albany: 9th (5-9)
Binghamton: 6th (3-6)
Buffalo: 15th (13-19)
Rochester: 12th (8-12)
Syracuse: 4th (3-4)

Bull's Eye: All five GSB cities are within the given ranges.
On Target: Three or four are in the given ranges.
Complete Miss: Two or fewer are in the given ranges.

All five were in range, with 4 of them being just making it. That's a Bull's Eye!

Finally, it's the Season outlook, which was made in the beginning of January. It involved the rankings of the five cities in this contest. Below are the cities' placements with my predicted rank in parenthesis.

1. Syracuse (1)
2. Rochester (2)
3. Binghamton (3)
4. Buffalo (4)
5. Albany (5)

Bull's Eye: The standings at the end of April will be Syracuse, Rochester, Binghamton, Buffalo and Albany.
On Target: Three are in the forecast spots.
Complete Miss: Two or fewer are in the forecast spots.

All five were in the position I had predicted, so that is another Bull's Eye!

Unfortunately, these two Bull's Eye forecasts were not enough to reach my 1.00 goal. The April and Season forecasts over on GSG were Complete Miss outlooks, so my average for the season is 0.90, the same as the Point Blank Range! This time, it was the GSG forecasts that let me down, as only one forecast was a Bull's Eye while three were of the Complete Miss category. On the GSB side, three were Bull's Eyes and two were Complete Misses.

So, the goal for next season will be the same this one, 1.00 or better.

Speaking of next season, I have some changes in mind that I'd like to get for the 2011-12 snow season. First and foremost, I got off to a late start, so I want to get the forecasts started in December and go through March instead of January through April like I did this season. Another idea floating around in my head is to have some sort of video forecast with these, instead of just text. I'll have to play around with that during the off season. If I can get it to work, it'll be here next season, if not, then it won't. I don't want to change it from text to video mid-season. All this been said, I feel like the current forecast structure is a keeper, so I will not be changing it next season.

It's a Wrap - Syracuse Wins the 2010 - 2011 Golden Snowball Award!

It's May 1st which means one thing, It's time to wrap up the 2010 - 2011 snow season here in CNY!!! It's official, Syracuse with another repeat victory wins the Golden Snowball trophy once again. What's that like 7 - 8 times in a row now. Whose counting huh? December really set the pace and there really was no looking back.

We kept hoping that the GSB contest would get close but everytime Rochester or Binghamton made a move on the snow hill Syracuse would just bounce back with even more snow. As for Buffalo it was all around them just not hitting in the right spot and Binghamton was able to slip past them.

I'll have to see how many times since we restarted the contest that Bingo has beaten Buffalo. Most likely not too many times. Stephen or I will put together a summary of how the 2010 - 2011 snow season went. For now I'm out to enjoy this nice run of weather that we are having. Congrats once again to Syracuse :)

I Think It's Time for a NO Snow Dance

Snowflakes were flying around once again in some of the Golden Snowball cities today :( I think we are at that point, make that past that point where it's time to say enough already. Don't get me wrong! I would still love to see some more records broken instead of the cold rain but I don't think it's going to happen this late in the game.

So I think it's time to throw in the beach towel (beach sounds good huh) and do a No Snow Dance to see if we can get the spring weather going. These cold and rainy with snowflakes days are getting old pretty fast. Not to mention my grass is as high as a few of the good snowfalls we've had this season. Nine more days and the 2010 - 2011 snow season will be just a memory. If it ever decides to end that is.

Shot In The Dark Forecasts: Winter 2011 Update

Got a bit behind where I wanted the updates to be, but here it is now. In this update, I'll be looking back at the March results, and see where the April outlook stands. It's about 3 weeks before the SITD Wrap Up, in which the April results will be final, as well as the forecast made at the beginning of the season. The goal is 1.00, when both Golden Snowball and Golden Snow Globe are combined.

The March forecast involved snowfall for the month compared to the historical average. Below are the snowfall totals for the five cities, with their respective averages in parenthesis.

Albany: 8.8 (10.9)
Binghamton: 25.9 (14.2)
Buffalo: 13.3 (12.4)
Rochester: 15.1 (16.6)
Syracuse: 18.5 (18.8)

Bull's Eye: All five GSB cities will have above average snowfall for March.
On Target: Three GSB cities will have above average snowfall in March.
Complete Miss: Two or less GSB cities will have above average snowfall in March.

I know there were some comments at the beginning of the month that basically said this was a no-brainer. Well, this season, there is no such thing as a no-brainer this season as only 2 of the 5 were above average for March.

With both GSB and GSG giving me Complete Miss outlooks for March, my average has now dropped to 0.83, below the goal of 1.00. Of the four remaining results, it looks like I'll be needing at least 2 Bull's Eye predictions to get to the goal.

With that in mind, here's a look at April so far. I had ranges for where I believed each of the 5 GSB cities would be for the end of April, basically the end of the snow season. Below are their current rankings (as of the 9th), with the range I had given them in parenthesis.

Albany: 9th (5-9)
Binghamton: 6th (3-6)
Buffalo: 16th (13-19)
Rochester: 12th (8-12)
Syracuse: 4th (3-4)

Right now, all five are in the ranges I set. The best way for me to get a Bull's Eye with this forecast is for there to be no more snow for the next few weeks. I'm sure most people would be fine with that!

Point Blank Range Forecasts: Winter 2011 Wrap Up

With the silliness that comes with the start of April out of the way (yes, the last post was an April Fool's Day joke!), it's time to see just how much of a joke this season's Point Blank Range Forecasts were.

To start, it's a look at the final forecast of the season: temperatures, and their relation to average. Below are the number of days the GSB cities had high temperatures below average from the 29th to the 30th.

Albany: 1
Binghamton: 1
Buffalo: 2
Rochester: 2
Syracuse: 1

Bull's Eye: All five GSB cities have below average highs both days.
On Target: All five GSB cities have below average highs in one day.
Complete Miss: Any GSB city has above average highs both days.

All five were below average on the 29th, but only Buffalo and Rochester were below average on the 30th. So, the final PBR Forecast of the season was On Target.

As a result, I do not meet the 1.00 average goal set at the beginning of the season. It was these forecasts that did me in this season, as of the 10 forecasts, only 1 was a Bull's Eye while 5 earned the Complete Miss designation. Golden Snow Globe forecasts were almost the exact opposite: 1 was a Complete Miss while 3 were in the Bull's Eye category. For the grand total, it's 18 points out of 20 forecasts, a 0.90 average.

So, the goal for next season will be the same as this season: 1.00 or better.

Tomorrow, I will try to get the Shot In The Dark Forecast results in for March. The SITD have 2 forecasts waiting for verification: the April outlook and the one done back in January for the entire Winter season. I'll try to get the full SITD wrap up done in the next few weeks.

New feature for 2011-12!

While the snow may still be coming down in some parts of the state, I figured now would be a good time to announce a new feature on the site, starting with the 2011-12 season.

Syracuse may be the snowiest among the five GSB cities, but where is Upstate NY's snowiest residence? That's where you come in! Yes, you! Unless of course, you don't live in Upstate NY, then this has nothing to do with you. Sorry. Starting with next season, we will be asking for our readers to state how much snow they've had every day. We'll add up the totals throughout the season, and the winner will be given the golden shovel! While we're still dealing with the remnants of this season, we are looking forward to the next one, and hope you all are too!

Point Blank Range Forecasts: Mar. 29-30

It's the last Point Blank Range Forecast of the season, and the way the forecasts have been, the end couldn't have come soon enough. Details on the last forecast to come, but first, as always, is the look back at the last outlook.

The previous prediction involved snowfall on the 23rd and 24th. Below are the totals for those 2 days.

Albany: 0.6
Binghamton: 5.2
Buffalo: 7.0
Rochester: 6.8
Syracuse: 3.9

Bull's Eye: Binghamton has more snow than any other GSB city.
On Target: Binghamton has more snow than 3 of the other GSB cities.
Complete Miss: Any other result.

Oh look! Another Complete Miss! That's 5 for the season. Combined with the On Target over at Golden Snow Globe, I'm below the 1.00 goal set before the season. The only way I can reach it now is with 2 Bull's Eye predictions. With 1 forecast left, it's all or nothing: both GSB and GSG forecasts must be Bull's Eyes or it is an unsuccessful season for me, at least as far as the PBR Forecasts are concerned.

Now on to this forecast, which will focus on temperatures. Hey, I need to give myself some chance at a Bull's Eye. Temperatures were the only Bull's Eye here, so that's what I'm going with when I need it most.

Cooler temperatures are in store for the GSB cities for most of the week. Temperatures should be below average for all GSB cities in at least one of the days.

Bull's Eye: All five GSB cities have below average highs both days.
On Target: All five GSB cities have below average highs in one day.
Complete Miss: Any GSB city has above average highs both days.

Good Bye Winter Hello Springter and Where is Done Day Already

Well spring is here but spring is definitely not in the air. Just a bunch of that white fluffy stuff that we call white gold in the winter months. In the spring I think most of us call it the white #%&% that just won't go away. All I can say is sooner or later it has to stop.

Our fun snow contest was mentioned across America on the America in The Morning radio show and the Jim Bohannon show both hosted by Jimbo. As hesitant as I am to post the clip for the fact that I am a sissy man when it comes to speaking I will. Keep in mind this was on a few hours sleep along with fighting bronchitis. As always I do try to give credit to Stephen butttt :( You can listen to the clip here which will open up whatever program you have on your comp that plays audio. A big thanks to Jim and Tom for the chance to make the normal fool of myself on over 500 radio stations across the country ;)

I like Jeff Kramer's idea to celebrate Done Day. Jeff who writes for the Syracuse Post Standard idea is to celebrate the first day that it reaches 65 degrees in CNY. Of course this is something that all of the Golden Snowball cities could celebrate. Ummm, scratch that! Albany really can't because isn't it something like 65 degrees most of the winter there?

According to Stephens stats it looks like Binghamton has moved up to it's 7th snowiest season on record with this last snowfall.

Point Blank Range Forecasts: Mar. 23-24

Happy Spring everyone! Ah, but just because the calendar says it's a new season, doesn't mean the weather has to go with it. One more push of snow is coming to the GSB cities. My forecast on that is to come, but first a look back at the last prediction.

The previous PBR forecast involved temperatures for the GSB cities. Below is the low temperatures for the two days, 11th first with 13th in parenthesis.

Albany: 53 (43)
Binghamton: 44 (38)
Buffalo: 34 (34)
Rochester: 49 (38)
Syracuse: 43 (40)

Bull's Eye: Friday's high will be at least 10 degrees warmer than Sunday's for all five GSB cities.
On Target: Friday's high will be at least 10 degrees warmer than Sunday's for 3 of the five GSB cities.
Complete Miss: Friday's high will be at least 10 degrees warmer than Sunday's less than 3 of the five GSB cities.

Only two cities had double digit differences, so this is a Complete Miss, the 4th of the season.

Despite this, my average went up, thanks to a Bull's Eye on Golden Snow Globe. Is it weird that I can forecast better for different parts of the U.S. than I can for my home state? Maybe it's just the nature of our weather, or the forecasts themselves. I'm still below the 1.00 goal though, and with 2 forecasts left, there is not much room for another Complete Miss.

Now on to this forecast which involves snowfall. It looks like Binghamton will be the hardest hit among the GSB cities. In previous forecasts, I would take one city over the combined totals of the other four. Those would backfire badly. I've finally learned my lesson, going a little more cautious this time.

Bull's Eye: Binghamton has more snow than any other GSB city.
On Target: Binghamton has more snow than 3 of the other GSB cities.
Complete Miss: Any other result.

2010-11 cracks Binghamton's Top 10 snowiest seasons

Yesterday, Binghamton reported 2.8 inches of snowfall, making this season their 8th snowiest so far with 109.2 inches. The 2001-02 season, with 107.2 inches, is now out of the Top 10. Here are Binghamton's top 10 snowiest seasons.

4. 1955-1956 (122.6)

Shot In The Dark Forecasts: April 2011

While it's still March, I wanted to get the April forecast in now. Before I do that though, I'll give a quick update on the March forecast.

If you recall, the outlook for the month involved snowfall compared to average. Below are the snowfall totals for the month so far, with monthly average in parenthesis.

Albany: 6.6 (10.9)
Binghamton: 20.2 (14.2)
Buffalo: 4.1 (12.4)
Rochester: 8.0 (16.6)
Syracuse: 14.1 (18.8)

Right now, only Binghamton is over their monthly average. I need at least 2 more to do the same to get the On Target spot, with all four meaning a Bull's Eye prediction.

Now on to April's outlook. I believe that the snow machine is coming to an end. There will be snow this week (more on that tomorrow!), but I believe that will be the final push. With that in mind, I'm giving a range for how this season will rank for each city at the end of April.

Albany: 5-9
Binghamton: 3-6
Buffalo: 13-19
Rochester: 8-12
Syracuse: 3-4

What's Your Pros and Cons About Winter

I'm just curious and have only 2 questions to ask. OK, maybe a few buttt....

First off are you ready to move on from the winter weather? No doubt it's been a pretty tough one but would ya rather see the 200 mark hit for Syracuse? Something none of the Golden Snowball cities have been able to accomplish yet. Buffalo was close with their record 199 inches butttt.... So is it lets move on or nah, lets have another storm or two to push us over the 200 mark is OK with me?

Second, if I were to try and sell our winter to someone outside of the city of Syracuse and the Mayor, who by the way isn't a sissy lady and grasps the winters we have here, What would your pros and cons be? LEAVE A COMMENT!

Obviously we have the winter fest and snow is good for that, really. Skiing, sledding and so on. Cons I suppose would be driving in the snow, over budget with plowing and so on. Leave some comments as what you think the pros and cons are about our snowfall season.

Tips and Tales of St Patty's Day Downtown - Re Post

First off Thank You Syracuse for a great regular season of college hoops and a good showing in the BE tourney. No doubt some good practice games as you get ready to snow storm your way to the national champions ;)

We'll be heading downtown in a bit and here is a re post of how the day normally goes. Not saying I'm proud of it but I am saying it's a blast :)

The St Patrick's Day Parade Weekend is here in Syracuse. Unfortunately only one of the few times I get to get out and enjoy Downtown Syracuse. A bunch of us every year, about 20 or more of us which is a mix of men and women normally hit a local soda pop bar early in the day. OK day meaning morning what can I say? Yes in the morning and don't be coming to any conclusions. It's only once a year we do this. Anyways family and friends come to town just for this day downtown. From Virginia, Poughkeepsie, Boston and so on. St Patty's Day downtown is so much fun that people come from all over the country for it.

Here is how the whole day plays out or should I say is suppose to play out. It hardly ever goes as planned which makes it even more fun. We normally start out at the Park Hill Tavern in East Syracuse where we get dropped off by our designated driver for the day. Normally one of our kids who BTW get paid well for for driving us but it is well worth it. Don't drink pop and drive. We catch the bus from the Park Hill to the city. So far in the 15 years give or take that we have been doing this I don't think we have ever caught the bus we intended to. Either all of us aren't there yet or we weren't watching for the bus and we miss the one intended. Once we even got on the wrong bus and ended up in NYC. Well not NYC but definitely the wrong bus that had a lot of detours on the way. It would of been faster walking there that year.

Finally we end up downtown for the Parade. Once we were even fortunate enough to see the parade. That was only because when we got off the bus the parade happened to be right there. Don't get me wrong, we do see the parade it's just that we watch it from inside the fine city bars that are heated and by the way are always packed when we arrive there. I just wanted to point out that we are not the only ones that start out early in the morning on St Patty's Day . One thing we do before we start is we each pitch in 20 bucks a person and elect two people to be in charge of buying the drinks all day. The bars are crowded so it would be foolish for 20 + people to go in together and stand at the bar, or should I say attempt to stand at the bar. Another note is that the first 20.00 we pitch in won't be the last and when I say drinks I'm talking soda pops of course . Tip - One thing I have learned about being elected to the Most important job of the day which is by far buying the drinks is that the first round you buy make sure you order the opposite of what the people wanted. You'll be the bad guy for a little while but it is well worth the shame, the boos and dirty looks of not being able to order a round of drinks correctly when they impeach you from that position and you get out of ordering the drinks for the rest of the day. Trust me, someone else will take over As for being the bad guy, sooner or later someone else will do something stupid to earn the title of bad guy so you'll be off the hook in no time.

Most of the day pretty much consists of freezing our tails off but having a Super time in the process. The way we do St Patty's day is pretty much just bar hop all day and test out all some of the different variety's of brews that are on tap at the bars. I suppose you could say that we aren't there so much as to have fun but let's say we are doing research work on the brews. Maybe this year we will even take notes on our research. I do know that most of the men with us prefer the darker soda pops. Another good tip is to elect a leader to lead your group to the different bars. Someone who actually knows their way around the city of Syracuse. Remember, most of the time it is pretty cold out and for some reason almost always without fail the wind is blowing pretty good. The worse thing is to make a wrong turn and walk for a half a mile or so only to find out you have to go back the other way. For that my Brother in-law normally gets elected and does a fine job most of the time but every now and then he makes a wrong turn. That's normally a good thing for who ever is the bad guy at the time enabling him to pass the title over to my brother in-law for getting us lost. Like I said the "bad guy or gal" gets passed along throughout the day and always has a ton of laughs to go along with it. Jeez, now that I am typing and keep seeing the word elected. I'm starting to see that St Patty's Day is actually a fine example of the democracy in progress with all the elections we have going on. Most of the time the person being elected isn't and to be frank doesn't want to be elected

All in all we hit maybe 5 - 7 soda pop shops. We'll normally order appetizers, wings or something at one of the bars early and then end up at Clarks sooner or later for one of their great roast beef sandwiches. Normally we hit Clarks for a roast beef sandwich butttt.... I wish I could plug all the bars that we hit but to be honest with you I'm just a follower the whole day hoping I don't get lost or left behind and never really check out the names of the bars we hit. I can only guess that any bar you end up in you'll have a great time. One thing that bothered me a bit last year is that during the day a lot of the bars weren't playing Irish songs. I don't know what was up with that. To the bar owners Please at least play Irish music in the daytime.

The biggest tip I can give is to dress warm. When your ready to leave the house and feel that your dressed up warm enough, go back and grab 3 extra coats. Only then will you be prepared for a great St Patty's day downtown. Then again I think it was a couple of years ago when the temps went up to 60 degrees and here was the Golden Snowball dude carrying a coat and 2 sweatshirts around looking like a fool. I did try the "can you hold this for a second while I do whatever" trick but that only worked for so long. I should of trusted the weatherman that time.

The day downtown or sometimes night downtown (depending on how much research some of us have done) will end with one of us calling our designated drivers to come pick us up. We use to try and catch or call a couple of taxis to get home but that is another story or two in itself. The last time we called for two taxis only one showed up. Being the gentlemen that we are (yes only gentlemen in our group ) we told the ladies to go ahead and we would suffer and wait it out until the next taxi shows up. Well what are the chances of not one of us having a watch on and you all know how time flies. Before we knew it almost a couple of hours went by. Anyways I'm sure you already figured out that the ladies weren't too happy with the men. Something to this day I haven't figured out because we all thought the women would of been impressed with how patient we were waiting for the taxi to arrive. Everyone knows men aren't known to be patient and so what if our patience was being displayed at a hopping bar. That shouldn't even come in to the picture should it That was the end to taxi's being used for the ride back to town.

Summary Finally - Sorry about the rant. I really could of kept going on. To sum it up I always thought St Patrick's day was a great big party downtown. After typing this up I discovered it's actually a democracy process in the works with all the electing we do in our group along with research work. Research on the different brews of beer downtown. The research work by far is the hardest part of the day. Now knowing that it's not the Big Party that I always thought it was I probably won't be able to enjoy it like I have in the past. I'll give it my best shot though

A Bit Off Topic: Mario Marathon

Over on Golden Snow Globe, I mentioned that I would explain why I wanted to forecast for Indiana, regardless of what conditions they'd have, this weekend. So I figured I might as well hit both sites with it.

In 15 weeks, Mario Marathon begins their 4th edition. The idea is simple, a few guys play games from the Super Mario series. The more people donate, the longer they play. All of the proceeds go to a charity called Child's Play, which gives toys, games, and such to various children's hospitals. Last year, Mario Marathon raised over $80,000.

Last year was the first year that I started watching the event. When I first heard about it, I thought it was pretty silly. And, I was right, but not for the right reasons. It simply is a lot of fun, and for a good cause. Obviously, you don't have to watch the whole thing, as it goes on for a few days straight, but I'm sure if you like to play and watch others play video games, any time you spend there will be worth your while.

I mentioned that the event does not start for another 15 weeks. There are a few reasons why I wanted to mention the event now. First off, since this is a site that is really focused on the winter months (we better not get snow in June!!!!), I wanted to at least mention it when we'd get more people here. The second reason is that the Mario Marathon crew will be holding a sort of mini event this Saturday afternoon. They don't have an official start time yet, as they will be testing their equipment before going live. The website is and you can follow them on Twitter as well.

Point Blank Range Forecasts: Mar. 11-13, 2011

Mild temperatures have been the story for the later part of the week, but they are not going to stay this way for long. More details on that to come, but first is the look back at the last forecast.

The previous outlook involved snowfall for Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse. Here are their snow totals from the 25th through the 27th of February.

Buffalo: 11.1
Rochester: 10.0
Syracuse: 9.3

Bull's Eye: All three get at least 8 inches, with at least one getting a foot, of snow this weekend.
On Target: All three get at least 8 inches of snow.
Complete Miss: At least one of the three gets under 8 inches of snow.

Neither could quite get to the foot mark over the three days, so it is an On Target forecast.

With this and the GSG forecast being On Target, my average remains below 1.00 for the season, now at 0.93. Just 3 forecasts remain, enough to either finish out strong or end with a whimper.

Now on to this forecast, which as hinted at before, focuses on temperatures. In particular, it compares Friday highs with Sunday's low for all GSB cities. I am expecting double digit differences for at least a majority of the region.

Bull's Eye: Friday's high will be at least 10 degrees warmer than Sunday's for all five GSB cities.
On Target: Friday's high will be at least 10 degrees warmer than Sunday's for 3 of the five GSB cities.
Complete Miss: Friday's high will be at least 10 degrees warmer than Sunday's less than 3 of the five GSB cities.

This is Albany's 10th snowiest season since 1951-52

With the latest storm, Albany has moved into the top ten of their snowfall seasons (since 1951-52). Now at 83.6, this season has overtaken the 1966-67 season, which had 80.9 inches.

Below are Albany's top ten snowiest seasons, since 1951-52.

While I believe the top spot is out of range, I could see this season end up in the top 5 when all is said and done. Wouldn't it be something if all five GSB cities got over 100 though? Let's make it happen Albany!

As for Binghamton, Buffalo, and Rochester, they are each outside of their respective top 10s, but are in striking distance. This is Binghamton's 14th snowiest season, 2.1 inches away from 10th. This is Buffalo's 23rd, 13.7 below 10th. For Rochester, this season is 17th, 12.7 behind 10th. Again, these rankings are all since the 1951-52 season, so the rankings are a bit standardized.

2010 - 2011 is Now Officially the 4th Snowiest Season for Syracuse

Updated 5:30 PM 3/7 - All of the new snow stats have been posted by NOAA and it's official now. Syracuse's snow season ranks 4th snowiest now. Once in awhile my math is right go figure. Syracuse and Binghamton both set a date record for today with the overnight snow. Binghamton had 8.2 inches more and Syracuse had 6.3 both records for the date going back to 1982. Albany added another 5.5 inches and zip for Buffalo and Rochester for today.

Wait there is more. Check out the stats and the cities above. Can anyone figure out what changes were made besides new snow totals?

Updated 12:15 - I just found a page on NOAA that shows the Syracuse airport is reporting 24 hour totals as of 12:05 3/7 at 13.4 inches. If I did my math right and most likely I didn't, lol that would put Syracuse in the #4 spot with 173.5 inches. Stay tuned :)) Math was 160.1 + 13.4 = 173.5 :))

Updated 2/7/11 - Syracuse has officially moved into the #5 spot as far as snowiest seasons go. The totals just reflect what was reported by NOAA for yesterday and are still not counting the overnight snow. Chances are that Syracuse has had it's 4th snowiest season once the overnight totals come out.

Last Night - As of 10 PM Syracuse has had it's 6th snowiest season on record and has a good shot at hitting the number 5 spot overnight. Can you say 200 inches :) Stay tuned.

Shot In The Dark Forecasts: March 2011

I'd like to say that the season is wrapping up, but seeing forecasts of a foot of snow on tv and online make me want to hold off on that. More on that later, but first, it's a look back at the February forecast.

That forecast involved snowfall totals for Rochester and Syracuse. Below are their seasonal totals that were recorded at the end of February.

Rochester: 112.0
Syracuse: 160.3

Bull's Eye: Rochester reaches 100, and Syracuse hits 150, by the end of the month.
On Target: Rochester reaches 100 by the end of the month.
Complete Miss: Rochester stays under 100 at the end of the month.

It's a Bull's Eye with both cities reaching the respective marks.

It turned out to be a great month for me. This Bull's Eye, combined with an On Target at GSG, brings my average up to 1.25. My intention at the beginning of the season was to make March the final SITD forecast. However, I have two forecasts that I'd like to do. So, the new plan is to have this one go for the month, and in a few weeks I will post the final one. This would give me 5 forecast periods, including the one done to start the season.

On that note, it's time for the March forecast. All the GSB cities are above their averages for the entire season, with more snow on the way. In an above average season, I just can't bring myself to forecast a below average March.

Bull's Eye: All five GSB cities will have above average snowfall for March.
On Target: Three GSB cities will have above average snowfall in March.
Complete Miss: Two or less GSB cities will have above average snowfall in March.

Here are the averages for March for each city.
Albany: 10.9
Binghamton: 14.2
Buffalo: 12.4
Rochester: 16.6
Syracuse: 18.8

2010-11 is 10th snowiest season in Syracuse.

The latest snowstorm has pushed this season to the 10th snowiest season on record for Syracuse (157 inches), overtaking the 2002-03 season (153.2) for that spot. The current 9th place season is 1970-71, with 157.2 inches. I would imagine this season will move past that one today. Below are the top 10 snowiest seasons for Syracuse.

Buffalo: 31st
Rochester: 21st

All of them, especially Buffalo, have a ways to go to reach their respective top 10. But, there still is plenty of time in the season, so maybe a few more of them can get toward the top of their snow piles!

Point Blank Range Forecasts: Feb. 25-27, 2011

I could see some unknown green stuff where the white lawn used to be. That must mean it's time for another snow storm! I'm sure most in upstate NY region already know about the upcoming storm, for which I will be forecasting for Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse. Before I get into that, it's a look back at the last forecast.

That last forecast featured snowfall amounts for the GSB cities. Here is their totals for the 20th and 21st.

Albany: 3.1
Binghamton: 4.7
Buffalo: 2.5
Rochester: 3.1
Syracuse: 1.8

Bull's Eye: Syracuse's snowfall total is higher than the combined total of the other 4 GSB cities.
On Target: Syracuse's snowfall total is higher than any other GSB city.
Complete Miss: At least one GSB city has more snow than Syracuse.

Um...yeah. I'm just going to let that one speak for itself.

That Complete Miss along with the On Target forecast over on GSG made it a bit of a tough weekend. Once again, I have fallen below the 1.00 goal, now sitting at 0.92. There are now 4 weeks of forecasts left to reach that threshold.

To get there, I need a strong finish here, so let's start it up this weekend! As mentioned at the beginning, this focuses on the trio of Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse. The big story is the Friday storm, and for good reason. Including that into the weekend, I see the three getting at least 8 inches, with at least one possibly getting a foot.

Bull's Eye: All three get at least 8 inches, with at least one getting a foot, of snow this weekend.
On Target: All three get at least 8 inches of snow.
Complete Miss: At least one of the three gets under 8 inches of snow.

Albany Skates Past Average Seasonal Snowfall

I'm having a hard time believing that Albany has a headline here at Golden Snowball. That doesn't happen too often but it's well deserved. They are officially past their annual/seasonal snowfall for the season with at least another month to go. Way to go Albany. I wonder if they can catch Buffalo.

Speaking of Buffalo they really need to get something going because Binghamton is right behind them on the snow hill. They are the two cities that are closest to each other right now. First place Syracuse is starting to look like a safe bet butttt....Hey, ya never know. Second place is definitely still up for grabs. I don't think Albany has much of a chance but it's a 3 way race right now between Rochester, Buffalo and Binghamton. As for the fat rats errr I mean groundhogs prediction, I'm still not buying it ;).

Rochester Goes Over Their Total Seasonal Snowfall

Way to go Rochester. Rochester is showing just enough new snow now to put them over their seasonal snow totals. All the snow hasn't been reported for the overnight so most likely they will add to it. Still waiting on the NOAA updates to see if Albany and Binghamton hit their average snow totals. If so that will make 4 out of 5 of the cities above average for the season with the exception of Buffalo.

I feel bad for Buffalo for the fact that the snow has been all around them this season and I'm sure several places around the area got some decent snowfall. That's how it all plays out sometimes though. My guess is that Syracuse is over the 150 inch mark with the over night snow that hasn't been reported yet. The big question stays alive, can they hit the well sought after 200 inch mark this season? We'll have to wait and see :)

The National snowiest city stats have finally been updated. Rochester managed to slip into 2nd place in that contest. You can check those stats out at The Golden Snow Globe site.

Point Blank Range Forecasts: Feb. 20-21, 2011

I wanted to get this done yesterday, but do to some difficulties, which are explained in more detail over on Golden Snow Globe, I was unable to get it done. That is the problem with waiting for verification sometimes, but that is the nature of it when trying to show how right (or wrong) a prediction was.

Last forecast involved temperatures, a comparison between highs and lows. Below are nighttime lows on Thursday (6pm to 6am) with Wednesday's highs in parenthesis.

Albany: 37 (39)
Binghamton: 46 (41)
Buffalo: 49 (44)
Rochester: 48 (44)
Syracuse: 40 (41)

Bull's Eye: All GSB cities have higher Thursday night low temperatures than Wednesday highs.
On Target: 3 or 4 GSB cities have higher Thursday night low temperatures than Wednesday highs.
Complete Miss: 2 or fewer GSB cities have higher Thursday night low temperatures than Wednesday highs.

With 3 out of the 5 having warmer Thursday night lows than Wednesday highs, the forecast is On Target.

A pretty solid week for me, including the Bull's Eye on GSG, pushes my total to 10 points from 10 forecasts, a 1.00 average. That is exactly the goal set at the beginning of the season. We've reached the halfway point for the forecasts, and I'd like to have it all wrapped up at the end of March.

Now on to this forecast. As I mentioned earlier, I wanted to get it done yesterday as it was a comparison with Syracuse snowfall and the other GSB cities. I still believe the same idea will work out for Sunday and Monday.

Bull's Eye: Syracuse's snowfall total is higher than the combined total of the other 4 GSB cities.
On Target: Syracuse's snowfall total is higher than any other GSB city.

Point Blank Range Forecasts: Feb. 16-17, 2011

This is the first midweek forecast of the season, and it is an effort to make up for not having one this past weekend. I will try to get another one up for this weekend as well.

Before all of that though, it is a look back at the last forecast, which involved snowfall for all GSB cities. Below are the weekend totals for each.

Albany: 0.5
Binghamton: 0.3
Buffalo: 4.1
Rochester: 3.3
Syracuse: 5.9

Bull's Eye: Albany and Binghamton combine for more snow than the other three GSB cities' combined total.
On Target: Albany and Binghamton have more snow than the other three GSB cities.
Complete Miss: Albany or Binghamton have less snow than at least one of the other GSB cities.

Warm temperatures kept Albany and Binghamton from getting the snow I expected. As a result, the forecast was a Complete Miss. Without a doubt, this is the worst forecast I've had for the GSB cities this season.

It was a tough forecast period for me as the GSG forecast only hit On Target. As a result, I'm at 7 points for 8 forecasts, which puts me at an average of .88. 12 forecasts, 6 periods worth, still remain for the season.

On to this forecast, which involves temperatures. A big warm up is expected for the region. As a result, I expect low temperatures on Thursday night to be warmer than Wednesday's high for most of the GSB cities.

Bull's Eye: All GSB cities have higher Thursday night low temperatures than Wednesday highs.
On Target: 3 or 4 GSB cities have higher Thursday night low temperatures than Wednesday highs.
Complete Miss: 2 or fewer GSB cities have higher Thursday night low temperatures than Wednesday highs.

Excited to Move to New York Repost

I think right about now some of us are feeling a bit tired of the snow. Below is a Cute story that has been going around the internet for a couple of years now about the weather in Good Ole New York State and is one of my favorites. It makes me wonder if someone from the south of Buffalo or the north of Syracuse isn't thinking this right now. Author unknown!

Dear Diary

August 12th - Moved to our new home in New York. It is so beautiful here. The mountains are so majestic, can hardly wait to see snow covering them.

October 14th - New York is the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves are all turned colors with shades of red and orange. Went for a ride through the beautiful mountains and saw some deer. They were so graceful. Certainly they are the most wonderful animal on earth. This must be paradise. I love it here.

November 11th - Deer season will start soon. I can't imagine anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous creature. Hope it will snow soon.

December 2nd - It snowed last night. Woke up to find everything blanketed with white snow. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. We had a snowball fight (I won) and when the snowplow came by, we had to shovel the driveway again. What a beautiful place, I love New York.

December 12th - More snow last night. I love it. The snowplow did his trick again to the driveway. I love it here in New York.

December 19th - More snow last night. I couldn't get out of the driveway to get to work. I am exhausted from shoveling. Dumb snowplow.

December 22nd - More STUPID snow last night. I've got blisters on my hands from shoveling and I think the snowplow hides around the curve and waits until I'm done shoveling the driveway. The JERK!

December 25th - Merry Christmas. More STUPID snow! If I ever get my hands on that STUPID JERK who drives the snowplow, I swear I'll kill the driver. Don't know why they don't use more salt on the roads to melt the darn ice.

December 27th - More snow fell last night. I've been inside for three days except for shoveling out the driveway after that snowplow goes through. Can't go anywhere; car's stuck in a mountain of snow. The weatherman says to expect another 10" of snow again tonight. Do you know how many shovels full of snow 10" is?

December 28th - The darned weatherman was wrong again! We got 34" of snow this time. At this rate it won't melt before the summer. The snowplow got stuck in the road and that STUPID JERK had the nerve to come to the door and ask to borrow my shovel. After I told him I had broken six shovels already shoveling all the snow he pushed into the driveway, I broke my last one over his STUPID head!

January 4th - Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get some food and on the way back a darned deer ran in front of the car and I hit it. It did about $3000.00 dollars worth of damage to the car. Those beasts should be killed. Wish the hunters would have gotten them all last November.

May 3rd - Took the car to the garage in town. Would you believe the thing is rusting out from the STUPID salt they put all over the roads.

May 10th - Moved to Florida. I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would ever live in that god forsaken state of New York.

This weekend's outlook is a bit of a modification on one done earlier. More details are available after the look back at the last forecast.

The January 21-23 forecast involved low temperatures for the weekend in all 5 GSB cities. Below are their coldest lows of the weekend.

Albany: -6 (11:59pm Jan 23)
Binghamton: -4 (11:59pm Jan 23)
Buffalo: -5 (10:47pm Jan 23)
Rochester: -8 (11:59pm Jan 23)
Syracuse: -5 (11:48pm Jan 23)

Bull's Eye: All five GSB cities will have low temperatures below 0 this weekend.
On Target: Three or four of the GSB cities will have low temperatures below 0 this weekend.
Complete Miss: Two or fewer of the GSB cities will have low temperatures below 0 this weekend.

All five were below 0 late Sunday, so the forecast was a Bull's Eye.

In all, it was a solid weekend as the Bull's Eye here was matched with an On Target forecast over on GSG. As a result, both site are at 1 each Bull's Eye, On Target and Complete Miss, giving me an average of 1.00 for the season.

Now onto this weekend's outlook. Snow showers seem to be in store for the southern and eastern portions of the state, so Albany and Binghamton should have more snow than the other three GSB cities this weekend.

Bull's Eye: Albany and Binghamton combine for more snow than the other three GSB cities' combined total.
On Target: Albany and Binghamton have more snow than the other three GSB cities.

Shot In The Dark Forecasts: February 2011

It's February, so it's time for a new edition of Shot In The Dark Forecasts. This month's focus is on milestones for some cities. But before we get into that, it's a look back at January.

January's outlook was based on snowfall for Albany, Binghamton and Buffalo, compared to the start of the season. Below are the month's totals, with snowfall in the beginning of the season in parenthesis.

Albany: 34.4 (13.0)
Binghamton: 25.0 (33.2)
Buffalo: 29.8 (33.6)

Bull's Eye: Albany, Binghamton and Buffalo will at least double their current snowfall totals by month's end.
On Target: 2 of the three double their current snowfall totals.
Complete Miss: 1 or fewer double their current snowfall totals.

Albany was the only one that had more snow in January than the start, so it was a Complete Miss. If only Binghamton and Buffalo could have kept up with Albany. ;)

While this one was a Complete Miss, the GSG forecast was a Bull's Eye. As a result, my average is at 1.00, exactly the goal set at the start.

Now onto this month's outlook. Since January focused on Albany, Binghamton and Buffalo, February will be about Rochester and Syracuse. For the month, Rochester averages about 20 inches while Syracuse averages about 24. These averages would put Rochester at about 100 inches, with Syracuse at around 140. I believe Rochester will reach the 100 mark, and Syracuse could see 150, by month's end.

Bull's Eye: Rochester reaches 100, and Syracuse hits 150, by the end of the month.
On Target: Rochester reaches 100 by the end of the month.
Complete Miss: Rochester stays under 100 at the end of the month.

Snow Storm warnings are posted for something like a third of the country and New York state is included. January is finally over and if the way February is coming in is any idea of how the rest of the month will be it could be a long one.

Most of the forecasts are calling for up to 18 inches of snow in the next couple of days with most of it falling late tonight and early tomorrow. This could be a chance for one of the cities to move a little closer to Syracuse. More to come! Here is how January snowed out in the GSB cities.

For those of us unable to make such a move, however, we're stuck with the chill. On that note, this edition of the Point Blank Range Forecasts focuses on the weekend's temperatures. Before we get into that though, it is a look back to see how the past forecast fared.

Last PBR focused on snowfall for the weekend in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse. Below are the snow totals for each of the three cities.

Buffalo: 1.8
Rochester: 2.6
Syracuse: 8.3

Bull's Eye: Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse each have snowfall totals of at least 6 inches for the weekend.
On Target: Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse each have snowfall totals of at least 3 inches for the weekend.
Complete Miss: Any other result.

Syracuse was the only one to reach either the 3 or 6 inch mark, so this is a Complete Miss.

A tough weekend for me as both the GSB and GSG forecasts resulted in Complete Miss outlooks. That brings my average down to 0.75, below the goal for the end of the season. There are eight more forecasts remaining this season, so I still have plenty of time to reach that mark.

Now on to this weekend's outlook. As mentioned earlier, this forecast focuses on the anticipated cold temperatures. I believe that a majority of the GSB cities will be below 0 this weekend, Friday night through Sunday.

Bull's Eye: All five GSB cities will have low temperatures below 0 this weekend.
On Target: Three or four of the GSB cities will have low temperatures below 0 this weekend.
Complete Miss: Two or fewer of the GSB cities will have low temperatures below 0 this weekend.

With Martin Luther King Day on Monday, it's a three day weekend for most people. So, I figured this edition of Point Blank Range Forecasts should be for Sunday through Monday. Before we get into this weekend's outlook though, it's a check of the outcome for the previous forecasts.

Last weekend's GSB outlook involved snowfall for all five GSB cities. Below is the snowfall totals for each.

Albany: 7.7
Binghamton: 5.3
Buffalo: 3.5
Rochester: 4.2
Syracuse: 6.1

Bull's Eye: Albany has more snowfall this weekend than the other GSB cities combined.
On Target: Albany has more snowfall this weekend than any other GSB city.
Complete Miss: At least one GSB city has more snowfall this weekend than Albany.

Albany had more snow than any other GSB city, but was far below the other 4 cities' combined total, so the forecast is On Target.

That gives me 1 On Target forecast for the GSB region. Combined with the 1 Bull's Eye forecast from GSG, I have 3 points out of 2 forecasts, giving me a 1.50 average so far.

Now on to this weekend's outlook. Indications are that Lake Effect snowfall is in store for Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse this weekend, so the PBR Forecast is for those three cities.

Bull's Eye: Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse each have snowfall totals of at least 6 inches for the weekend.
On Target: Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse each have snowfall totals of at least 3 inches for the weekend.
Complete Miss: Any other result.

Some More January Snow Stats

I was curious after the December snowfall how this January was going so far compared to normal. So far all of the golden snowball cities are above their average snowfall for January. Albany has almost tripled their normal snow so far. Jeesh, I can't believe I am talking about Albany ;) Looking at the seasonal stats I think this is the first time since the beginning that all of the GSB cities are above their averages for the season not to mention above last years snow totals. What's this all mean??? Not a clue man, not a clue :)

Someone asked how much snow has fallen since the 9th of January when I made a post about the monthly snow totals. Here are the totals from this last blast of snow from the 9th until the 13th. All I can say is Buffalo better get it's game on or they you may be right next to Albany. Yeah I know, Albany who :)

Buffalo is King for a Quiet January Snowfall so Far

National Snow Contest Just Updated at GoldenSnowGlobe.com

I just took a look at the snowfall stats for the month of January. It's been a slow start so far for all of the cities, well maybe not for Albany which we all know isn't use to snow :)

This month has been a good chance for the other cities to make up some snowflakes on the King of The Snow Hill, Syracuse but it isn't happening. At least so far it isn't. Buffalo is king of the month so far picking up just under 3 inches on Syracuse followed by Albany melting a couple of inches off of Syracuse's lead.

Here is how much snow the GSB cities have received for the month of January so far;

Buffalo - 8.5
Albany - 7.7
Rochester - 5.6
Syracuse - 5.6
Binghamton - 5.4

It should be a couple of interesting months ahead and I still think the golden snowball trophy is up for grabs. Have a Great Weekend All!

Point Blank Range Forecasts: Jan. 7-9, 2011

Before I get into the first Point Blank Range Forecast of the season, I figured I'd mention what the PBR Forecast is. Basically, a PBR is the exact opposite of the Shot In The Dark forecast in that research has been done while making the forecast, though sometimes it can be from a gut feeling. I also try to keep it from being like a typical forecast that is seen on TV or on other websites.

Albany is a distance last place right now, but from time to time, they could still get more snow in a given period than the other GSB cities. That is exactly what this edition of the Point Blank Range Forecast is featuring.

Bull's Eye: Albany has more snowfall this weekend than the other GSB cities combined.
On Target: Albany has more snowfall this weekend than any other GSB city.
Complete Miss: At least one GSB city has more snowfall this weekend than Albany.

Interesting Snow Stats Thanks Jim Teske TV 9 in Syracuse

I'm way behind in posting and one of the things I wanted to post about was what Jim Teske from channel 9 weather here in Syracuse sent me. Some pretty good snow stats as to what the chances are of a city winning the golden snowball award going into January with the lead. In other words what are the chances of a big come back right now for Rochester, Buffalo or Binghamton. He didn't factor in Albany and as we all know here, who cares. No offence to Albany of course ;)

Jim went back 20 years and gathered all of the stats for the GSB cities and came up with some great results below. Jim also has a post for discussion going on at the TV 9 Weather section.

To sum it up the odds are against a city coming back with a city having a big lead at the end of December. That said this season has been somewhat odd considering 2 of the cities, Syracuse and Rochester have already broken a monthly snowfall record in December so who knows. Here is a little of what Jim wrote to me/us.

Jim Teske - I got to thinking whether the city in the lead at the first of the year ends up winning the award most of the time. I looked back at the last 20 years and I found that 12 out of the 20 times that was the case.

I have the lead (or deficit) the ultimate winner had at that point in the season. For the 8 times that someone made a 'comeback' the ground they had to make up was not that large except for 2006-07 when Syracuse was behind by 20" Right now Syracuse is up by about 26" Also 2001-02 sticks out when Buffalo had their week long lake effect event around Christmas. They were up by 75"!

Shot In The Dark Forecasts: January 2011

It has been a quiet start to 2011, but those in the GSB areas know that can change pretty quickly. Rochester and Syracuse broke December records, so this month's focus will be on the other three cities: Albany, Binghamton and Buffalo, which also happen to hold the bottom three spots in the current standings.

Buffalo (33.6 inches) and Binghamton (33.2 inches) are just shy of the three foot mark, while Albany (13 inches) is just above one foot, for the season. I am expecting January to provide a bit more snowfall for each city.

Bull's Eye: Albany, Binghamton and Buffalo will at least double their current snowfall totals by month's end.
On Target: 2 of the three double their current snowfall totals.
Complete Miss: 1 or fewer double their current snowfall totals.

In other words, if Buffalo gets 33.6 inches, Binghamton gets 33.2 inches and Albany gets 13 inches in January, that will be a Bull's Eye. Two of them getting the respective threshold will be On Target while 1 or fewer will be a Complete Miss.

Shot In The Dark Forecasts: Winter 2011

So much for getting the forecasts up by New Year's. Basically, Shot In the Dark forecasts are a gut reaction, with little to no research involved in the outlook. The seasonal forecast is perhaps the biggest gut reaction of them all, as they involve results about three months away from now.

This time, the Golden Snowball SITD focuses on the standings when the contest is called, usually at the end of April. Syracuse has a big lead, and I'm not sure if another city will be able to catch Syracuse. On the flip side, I have no reason to believe Albany will be anywhere but 5th. The real race seems to be for 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I see Rochester taking 2nd and Binghamton being 3rd.

Bull's Eye: The standings at the end of April will be Syracuse, Rochester, Binghamton, Buffalo and Albany.
On Target: Three are in the forecast spots.
Complete Miss: Two or fewer are in the forecast spots.

Introducing this year's forecasting features

Visitors on the Golden Snow Globe may recall my forecasting bits from last season. The basic idea was to make 2 forecasts in each post: one for somewhere in New York state and one for somewhere else in the country. There were 20 posts, or 40 forecasts, in all. The goal was to have an accuracy of 90% or better. The feature was called The Golden SnowCast. I've worked on some tweaks, and coming soon, I'll begin forecasting once again.

The first change is that I'll be doing two types of forecasting, long range and short range, instead of just one like last year. Short range basically follows the same format as last year's Golden SnowCast: I'll forecast for a few days away, usually weekends. The long range forecast will involve a season outlook (basically, the end of March) and predictions for January, February and March.

Secondly, the verification system has been changed. Last year, it was either right or wrong, no in between. This year, I'm introducing a target based system. Each forecast will have three different categories: Bull's Eye, On Target or Complete Miss. A Bull's Eye is worth 2 points, On Target is worth 1 and a Complete Miss is worth 0. The goal will be to be at 1.00 or better by season's end.

Third, instead of calling the zones New York State and World, they are now Golden Snowball and Golden Snow Globe. Last year, most of the NYS forecasts involved the GSB cities, and the World forecasts mostly involved other U.S. cities, so this is just a minor change really. Each zone's forecast will be posted on the respective sites.

Finally, I'll be taking suggestions into account when making the forecasts. Last year, we had a feature called Stump the Weather Chump. While that will stay this year, I figure we can expand on that this year. Basically, if a suggestion fits into the forecasting features, I'll try to use it there. If not, it'll be used as a Stump the Weather Chump challenge.

I'm sure all of this will make more sense as the forecasting begins. I plan on doing a season outlook on New Year's Eve, and the January look on New Year's Day. The first weekend forecast will be next week.

Rochester Breaks December Monthly Snowfall Record

According to NOAA, the national weather service out of Buffalo, Rochester broke the all time record for most snowfall for any December. Way to go Rochester. To me the certain monthly records rank third and are hard to break which makes it pretty cool IMO.

The hardest record would be the record for most snow in a season followed by the most snow recorded ever in any given month and then what both Rochester and Syracuse did this month. The most snowfall in a certain month... Congrats Rochester!!!!!

With Syracuse having taken over the updates on the site (and deservedly so), I figured it was about time to shift the focus off of the current contest, especially since it's been a fairly calm period for the GSB cities. There was a pretty good discussion on the previous update about the snowiest days ever recorded in Syracuse. On Wednesday, 11.9 inches fell at the Syracuse airport, over double the previous record for the day: 5.4 set way back in 1951.

Syracuse's snowiest December on record was in 2000 with 70.3 inches. So far this month, the city has 69.5, so it really is not a matter of if the record will be broken, it's a matter of by how much.

In terms of snowfall before the official start of Winter, Syracuse has already broken that record too. The old one was set in 1995 at 63.5. Currently, Syracuse stands at 70.3 with a few days remaining before Winter officially begins.

There is some good news for those of you in the area who are tired of shoveling or driving in the snow. Snowfall is expected to be minimal for the next few days.

Rochester and Syracuse Sliding Toward December Snow Records

12/16 11:30 am - I just got through shoveling about 5 inches of snow, 2 inches of it was probably already reported leaving about 3 more inches so no doubt Syracuse has to be right around the all time record snowfall for December. Quiet right now though. Anything new going on in Rochester?

Updated 10:45 PM - NOAA just put out some new stats for Syracuse. They are showing 64.9 inches of snow for December making this the second snowiest December on record. The old record was 64.6 set in 1989. They now need another 5.5 inches for this to be the snowiest December on record.

Both Rochester and Syracuse are closing in on their all time snowiest Decembers on record. I'll have to look around more to see what Binghamton's record is. Monthly snow records have always impressed me since I took over as the stat keeper of the Golden Snowball contest. I think for the fact that they are pretty hard to break and everything has to fall into place just right.

Well that seems to be happening right now for Syracuse and Rochester. There is no doubt in my mind that Rochester will break their December snowfall totals. Rochester's December snowfall totals as of 4:PM today, 12/15 were at 43.0 inches. Leaving them just another 3.3 inches of snow left to break the old record set in 2008 according to The Democrat and Chronicle out of Rochester. Will tomorrow be the day for The Rock???

As for Syracuse they are sitting at 59.4 inches as of 5 PM today 12/15 and at least another 3 inches has fallen since. Right now according to Meteorologist Peter Hall at CnyCentral.com the record for December snowfall is 70.3 dating back to 2000. Right now Syracuse has had their 3rd snowiest December and most likely come morning or later tonight will be at the 2nd snowiest Dec. on record if the stats are right. Again, no doubt in my mind Syracuse will break the record. Stay Tuned and have a great night :)

Rochester Melts Away Some of Syracuse's Lead

Rochester knocked a couple more inches off Syracuse's lead yesterday. Syracuse hasn't gotten anything near what was expected and I think the same is happening to Buffalo. The snow is all around the area just not where we need it to be. Where it gets measured :( Here are the final snow stats for yesterday, 12/14.

Rochester - 7.3
Buffalo - 5.5
Syracuse - 5.0
Albany - 1.6
Binghamton - 1.3

12/15 1:00 AM - Here is another update for this second round. Syracuse is showing another 4 inches give or take But... That was as of about 10 PM. Rochester and Buffalo are only showing as of about 4 PM. Lets see what the stats show come the next update :)) Good Night All!

7:00 PM - Just did a quick update. Only Rochester and Buffalo reported. Buffalo added 5.5 inches so far today and Rochester added another 6.8 to their snow totals.

All of the snow stats should be up to date as far as yesterdays totals go. Rochester managed to melt away about 5 inches of snow from Syracuse's lead. Buffalo gained a little over 2 inches on Da Cause. Both Syracuse and Bingo only picked up about an inch and a half of the white fluffy stuff. Hey and even Albany picked up a little :))

I have a feeling my niece Kim is probably mad at me today because I told her that she may have a snow day either today or tomorrow or both. Well that didn't pan out for today but maybe the kids will get lucky tomorrow. It should be interesting once some of the overnight and today's totals come out. Not much going on in Syracuse right now so this is a good chance for the other cities to melt away some of their lead. Below are what was reported for Yesterday.

Get Ready for Round Two

It's about 1:30 am here in DaCuse. Cold, windy with light steady snow. What's it doing in your neck of the woods???

I've been keeping an eye on NOAA and on some of the weather websites today. I was thinking and maybe even hoping we were going to have a repeat of last weeks snow with perhaps Syracuse and Rochester making out pretty good again with this round. :)

The snow predictions seem like they have been going up and down for a good part of yesterday so in my opinion I think it's still up in the air as to who will get what and how much? I'm still liking Rochester as the winner of this round but Syracuse may be able to hold them off as far as totals go thru Thursday. Buffalo looked like they were getting some snow earlier? Albany is most likely to finally add something to their snow totals. Something they haven't been able to do since they started up the 2010 - 2011 Golden Snowball contest.

More to come in the morning and it will be interesting to see what happened overnight.

Some Syracuse Snow Stats

Good luck saying that title 5 times fast! :)

This is my first post as a contributor to the site, so I figured what better way to celebrate than a look back at the last storm.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm produced the fourth highest snowfall totals in any four day period on record. Below are the top 4 four day totals, with the last date in the four day period in parenthesis.

44.6 inches (2/1/1966)
44.5 inches (3/14/1993)
44.3 inches (1/31/1966)
43.2 inches (12/8/2010)

I find it a bit interesting that the three higher amounts are all in the later portion of the season. So, in other words, this the highest amount of snow Syracuse has ever had in a four day period this early in the season.

It was also the 6th highest 5 day total, and the 5th highest 3 day total.

It snowed continuously from 6:16 AM December 4th to 8:10 AM December 8th. That's a total of 97 hours and 54 minutes.

Oh yeah, more snow is expected toward the later part of the weekend, and the early part of next week.

Is Buffalo's snowiest season for all GSB cities (199.4 in 1976-1977) in trouble? Obviously, it's way too early to tell, but Syracuse is already about a quarter of the way there.

By the way, Winter has not officially begun yet. That's December 21st, almost 2 weeks away.

Has it Finally Stopped Snowing in Da Cuse

I'm looking out the window and I'm seeing something that has been missing for about a week now. Blue sky's! Not a single snowflake is falling here in Syracuse and we'll see how long that lasts. What a difference 4 - 5 days make in the great snow race called Golden Snowball.

Albany started off this season back around Nov 7th - 8th with 1.3 inches of snow and hasn't added to their totals since. Then come around Nov. 27th Buffalo grabbed the lead with 1.6 inches of snow total. Rochester decided to take over the snowfall lead around Dec. 5th - 6th and got to enjoy it for about a day before Syracuse said in a nice way of course, "step aside please and thank you very much". OK, Isaid that and not Syracuse :)

Syracuse gained the lead with some record breaking snowfall. Three days straight they set a daily record for snow totals including yesterday picking up 14.9 inches of snow beating the old record of 8.9 set back in 1961. Way to go 'Cuse!!!

Right now all of the cities are ahead of their average snowfall for this time in the snow season and are blowing away last years snow totals. Syracuse stands out of course with probably 4 feet more of snow falling compared to last season. The overnight totals still haven't been added.

A storm is heading our way in the next few days and it will be interesting to see which city makes out the best with it. I have a feeling it will be more westerly winds and predict advantage Buffalo and Rochester. Just a hunch or maybe wishful thinking after shoveling about 8 times so far this week. So does the Syracuse lead make it a lock for Syracuse once again? No way, it's not even close to being over. As a matter of fact the snow season is just beginning :))

Snow Keeps Piling On in Syracuse and Rochester

5:00 PM Update - NOAA just came out with the late afternoon snow stats for today. Syracuse set another snowfall record for the date with 10.2 inches so far today breaking the old record of 8.9 set back in 1961. Syracuse is sitting at 41.9 inches on the season. Rochester picked up close to a couple more inches and that's about it for the other GSB cities.

It's been snowing non stop for probably 4 days now in the Syracuse area and Rochester and Binghamton aren't doing too bad either. The shoveling is definitely starting to get old even for us snow lovers. Syracuse set another date record with 9.3 inches of snow breaking the old record of 7 inches set back in 1958. The Rock just missed setting one. If I were to guess, I think Syracuse will have about another foot or so of snow to add come the next update or the one after that.

I shoveled about 6 inches late last night/early morning as it was snowing about 2 inches an hour. By the time I was done it looked like I never shoveled. Wake up this morning and it's still snowing and to be honest I'm loving it. Well give me about 20 minutes when I go out to shovel again and I'll probably change my tune for a little while anyways.

Syracuse Snow Around 12:30 Today

Tired of Cleaning the Snow Off Your Car - It Could Be Worse

It's way too early into the snow season to even think this will be a run away snow contest. Rochester and Binghamton have been getting the snow too and I know Buffalo will be jumping in sometime soon. One of our visitors Charles mentioned the possibility of a big storm coming early next week and I heard the same. Can it get any better than it's been the last 4 days??? We can only hope.

We have another lead change (LC) after yesterdays totals were updated. Syracuse set a date record picking up 12.2 inches of the white fluffy stuff passing the old snow record of 8.8 inches that was set in 2000. Binghamton also set a date record piling up 9.1 inches of snow breaking their old record of 8.5 set in 2003 and moved into second place. Buffalo is reporting 5.8 inches, Rochester 5.2 and Albany isn't reporting at all :)

These are the stats as of yesterday and there is still a lot of inches to add to the city totals including the overnight snowfall. With the exception of Albany all of the Golden Snowball cities are above their normal snowfall averages and are blowing away last seasons totals. Pretty good numbers for the slow start that we all got off to. I'll get a late afternoon/evening update in when the new totals come out. I also did a late night update on the national snow contest last night and I am about to update the top 10. That contest is also getting pretty interesting and I'm liking the way the NY cities are looking right now :)

Snowy Rochester Slips into The Lead

Update 9:45 PM:

Just a heads up that we have had another lead change but I'll wait until tomorrow to change the stats. As of around 4:pm Buffalo grabbed the lead from Rochester and Syracuse moved into second, Bingo jumped to 3rd place and the Rock sits in 4th now. At least 3 of the cities, maybe 4 may set a snow record for the date. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top come morning. I'm off to shovel.

Current Seasons Totals as of 4 - 5 PM

Buffalo - 17.0
Syracuse - 14.4
Binghamton - 13.7
Rochester - 13.4
Albany - Enough said :)

The snow totals are in from yesterday and Rochester is the King of the Snow Hill. They slid past Buffalo by only .05 but enough to get them on top and they are the first GSB city to reach the one foot of snow mark.. It will be interesting to see if they hold the lead through the next update because some of the overnight snowfall hasn't been reported yet.

Here in the Syracuse area I just shoveled about 5 inches of settled snow. We'll see what NOAA comes out with later in the day or evening for the GSB cities. So far there have been 3 Leaders this season. Albany started the season out, Buffalo grabbed the lead from them and now Rochester takes over as the possible snow champion. I think it's going to be a fun and exciting season and I'll be posting the Golden Snowball winter outlook forecast sometime in the near future. I know everyone just can't wait for that post, Not.

Syracuse's Snowless Streak Ends

Syracuse hasn't been able to have an inch at a time fall this season . That is up until yesterday when 1.1 inches of snow fell. The second longest snow less streak on record.

I think the last time Syracuse seen and inch of snow was on February 27th. According to Sean Kirst at syracuse.com . Last season we sled past the old record going 287 days without an inch. This season Syracuse went 280 days I believe without an inch of snow falling in a day. Syracuse better be careful because we may just lose our Farmers Almanac's #1 ranking for the worst winter city in the US
That said it's been snowing off and on all day and at least 3 inches so far in my neck of the woods. Right now Onondaga and Madison county are under a Lake Effect snow warning until 7am so get up a little early tomorrow to clean off the cars and the driveways. I was watching th radar off and on today and it looked like Rochester was under a good snowband.

Anyone have any info on what's going on in the other GSB cities?

The National Golden Snow Globe Contest Begins

Just wanted to give a heads up that we updated the cities in the national snow race over at the Golden Snow Globe site. One of the leaders right now was second from last, last season. It should be another fun snow contest this winter.

Buffalo continues to add to their snow totals and it looks like they are just missing out on the really heavy stuff. Either way I'm jealous of what they are getting. Hey, were any of you stuck in that weather around the Buffalo area yesterday? Hopefully not looking at the video on CNN, the Weather Channel and other national news not to mention local.

Rochester Finally Gets Some Measurable Snow

An Update as of early this morning in the Buffalo area - Democrat and Chronicle

Rochester picked up over 3 inches of snow yesterday to make a run at the top but Buffalo said slow down rock, not yet. Buffalo added 5.3 inches of snow to their totals which keeps them on top of the snow contest. Rochester shows that 3.4 inches of the white fluffy gold fell from the sky above them which shot them from last place into second place this snow season. There still may be more to add to those totals come tomorrow morning.

Syracuse remains in third place followed by Albany and Binghamton. Binghamton has to be feeling pretty lonely down there at the bottom of the snow chart. Don't worry, we all know that Albany will take that spot over sometime soon.

Yesterday was a day of heavy rain and strong winds, followed by snow at most of the Golden Snowball cities. Funny thing is here we are in December and 4 of the 5 cities broke a record for the most rainfall for the date. Binghamton was the only city that didn't even though they had 1.10 inches of rain.

Buffalo Inches Their Way into First Place

Way to go Buffalo sneaking in just enough to knock Albany down from the top spot on the snow mountain. All 5 of the Golden Snowball cities have boarded the sled into the 2010 - 2011 snowfall season. I think come tomorrow there should be some more snow to add to the totals. It still just don't look right seeing Albany up near the top. Let's see how long they can stick around.

Black Friday Sales at Walmart and Other Stores

OK, ya know I have to try and get some plugs to some of my shopping sites before the snow really starts to fall. We have a few sites that have been updated and one is geared toward apparel and clothing for teens. Both boys and girls clothing. We listed several of what we feel are the top clothing stores for teens at teenscloset.com . Trendy and fashionable shirts and tops, pants, jeans, dresses, shoes and all other apparel.

Another site which includes a lot of toy stores including Walmart is toy-stores.info . I think at last check we have 10's of thousand of toys and games there and for the best results use the search at the top of the site.

One of my favorite sites that we are still working on is college-sports-apparel.com which is college merchandise. Last I checked we have around 80,000 college products which include some great sweatshirts, t-shirts, jerseys and other sports apparel for almost every college team around. College logo T-shirts and sweatshirts with my favorite logo are definitely one of my favorite Christmas gifts :) Of course in my case it would be Syracuse sweatshirts and t-shirts.

First and foremost a Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!!! I like the rest of you I'm sure are looking forward to spending time with family and friends this Thanksgiving. I'm also thankful for the great family and group of friends that I do have and most thankful for the 3 wonderful children that I have.

As far as snow goes, looking at the stats it looks like we are off to a snow season pretty much just like last season other than Albany kicked off the Golden Snowball contest instead of Binghamton. The last I looked at syracuse.com Syracuse has gone enough days in a row without at least an inch falling bringing it up to the 7th longest period without at least an inch of snow falling at one time since stats have been kept. We'll have to do a little research and see what Bingo, Buffalo and the Rock are as far as that category goes. Enough said for now because we all know there is still a longggg snow season ahead of just waiting to start up.

Albany Strikes First Let the Snow Games Begin

Albany officially kicks off the 2010 - 2011 Golden Snowball Contest. NOAA is showing that Albany picked up 1.3 inches of snowfall yesterday. Way to go Albany and enjoy the lead while you have it. Last year Binghamton started off the snow contest.

Just a trace of snow for the other 4 cities which include Binghamton, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse for anyone new to the website. Is this the season that Syracuse finally goes down? Will there be an upset? I think Syracuse's winning streak may be broken this season for the fact that it's been too many consecutive wins for them. Are We Ready to Start The Golden Snowball Contest

Who is ready for the snow to start falling? I'll give a no comment for now anyways :) ZR just posted that Albany is most likely getting ready to start the 2010 - 2011 contest up. I have to be honest I have been avoiding the site in hopes that my fall weather would last/start. It does look like there are a few warm days coming up but I think we all know that we can't go to much longer without more than just a trace of snow.

I'm still not too happy that goldensnowball.com had to be moved over to blogger so most likely I'll be changing over to wordpress which is another type of blog so stay tuned to that.

I'm also going to be giving a little space to snow plowers on the site so if that's what you do in the winter and are in/around any of the cities in the contest then send an email to comments @ goldensnowball . com . It's a Wrap!!! Congratulations to Syracuse on winning the 2009 - 2010 Golden Snowball Award. Yeah I know it's getting old isn't it? Once again Syracuse has been able to hold off the cities of Rochester, Buffalo and Binghamton to be king of the snow hill and capture the well sought after Golden Snowball Trophy.

This season was pretty much just a snow storm away thru a good part of the snow season to see what I thought may have been a new winner. It just never happened. What killed the hopes of a new winner in my opinion this season was similar to last years, a mild March and April. For the last two months, March and April Binghamton received the most snow and it was only 2.6 inch. Both Rochester and Albany received .2 inches for both months combined and Syracuse and Buffalo received just a trace of snow.

I think the biggest surprise was the fact that Buffalo ended up in 4th place. Binghamton, our southern city in the contest was able to hold on to 3rd place. I'll have to take a look back and see if Buffalo has ever been below 3rd at the end of the snow race. Binghamton was also the only city to beat both their normal seasonal snowfall beat last years totals. The rest of us had what can only be described as an easy winter season. Wouldn't it have been nice if Albany beat Buffalo??? I'm kidding, NOT. I'll try to throw together a season summary in the near future but you all know how that normally turns out.

Enough said other than a BIG THANKS to everyone that visits here and has fun with the contest and thanks to all of you who post here which really makes the contest fun. That's what it's all about!!!

Snowing Today with Just a Few Days Left

Hey, is this contest still going on. It is although I've been missing for awhile. Only 3 days left and go figure there has been a couple of flurries here in the Syracuse area today. Other than some rainy days March and April have been pretty decent and lets hope May is too.

Blogger has decided that they are going to make some changes and the deadline for me to move the site as I understand it is on May 1st. That's the day that we always announce the contest is over. I think most of us know it's pretty much over right now but I still like to wait until that date. I think what I'm getting at is that if the blog looks a lot different or there isn't much here come Saturday you can all assume that I screwed up the migration of the Golden Snowball site. Hopefully that won't happen but hey, you all know how I am.

As for the national contest over at goldensnowglobe.com most likely trying to play it safe we will list an unofficial winner until I can hopefully talk with NOAA to make sure we didn't miss any city over 100,000 that still may not be listed. I'm still not convinced or comfortable at this point that we have every city that matters covered.

Robins, NCAA and Great Weather

It looks like the Robins are starting to come back into town. This morning was the first one that I have seen. Normally I will see a few when I first see them but only one this time. It looks like he/she has the whole neighborhood to itself for the time being. Has anyone else been seeing them?

Nothing to talk about as far as snow goes. When I updated the National contest earlier in the week only a handful of cities had snow to add to their totals. This week has been awesome weather wise and I finally got the car cleaned out. Yup, took the camping stuff out from last year including tent, sleeping bags and cooler. I also took out the golf clubs, dusted them off but put them back into the car. My son called from the golf course today but I couldn't get out. Too busy watching the NCAA Tourney.

CONGRATS to CORNELL BIG RED - Wooo Hooo

Syracuse plays tonight and after the tough start the Big East teams had yesterday so far so good today with Pitt and West Virginia winning big. Yesterday the BE went 1-3 and most likely killed one of my brackets. I'm still OK on 2 others I played. All for fun and just matchsticks as the prize of course ;) The bracket that got killed I made it a big east final four with Georgetown and Notre Dame in there. Both teams lost of course. I think the worse thing about it is with all of the upsets so far up until tonight I only had 6 losses on that one and the only loss on the left side of the bracket was Georgetown :( Oh well, hopefully the other 2 will pull through for me. How are all of you doing on your tourney picks. Just one sweet 16 loss so far on my end. Good Luck All and hopefully everyone has been enjoying the weather. I'm still thinking some more snow to go after these teaser days disappear.

Still Just a Snow Storm Away

First off thanks for all the posts and emails offering condolences, thoughts and prayers. They were deeply appreciated :)

Second off congrats to the Syracuse Orangemen on being ranked #1 in all of the basketball polls this week. Wooo Hooo and Go Cuse!!! It's been a fun season.

Now back to the snow contest ;) The stats were just updated and although the snow season is winding down it's Rochester and even Binghamton are just a snow storm away from over taking Syracuse as the snowiest city in the Golden Snowball contest and March has had some good ones so it ain't over until the fat man sings and I'm not singing yet.

Binghamton has been the surprise city in my opinion this season so far. Right now they are less than an inch from their normal seasonal snowfall. They are also the only city above their totals for this time last season. No doubt the biggest slagger is Buffalo right now. They are below their normal average seasonal snowfall to date and who would have thought they would be in 4th place this far into the season. Not me!

Rochester is hanging with Da'Cuse still and thats were a storm that hangs to the west could set them up for a victory. I know it was either last season or the season before where Buffalo and Rochester picked up about a couple of feet late in the contest and Syracuse didn't get squat. Something to think about. I think ZR or one of the other visitors should do a little snow dance to see if they can close the gap. Right now it's looking like some warmer temps are here for several days but I don't think we have seen the last of the cold and the way this season has been so far anything can happen.

Snow Updates Coming Soon

Syracuse Hits 100 Inches Binghamton on the Move

Noonish Update - The NOAA stats for Buffalo and Rochester were posted around 4:30 this morning and we have another change in the snowfall lineup. Binghamton has knocked Buffalo down to the number 4 spot on the snow hill. Right now it looks like the storm is flaring up a bit around Rochester and swirling it's way towards Buffalo.

Syracuse finally hit the 100 inch mark as of around Midnight but I think the bigger news is how Binghamton is making a move on the cities to the north. Buffalo and Rochester haven't had their stats updated since yesterday afternoon as I'm typing and I think the new stats come out around 4 - 5 am when I'll be napping. That said there is a good chance that by the end of today Bingo just might be moving up a spot, hmmm, or two. More to come later today! Night All!

Winter Storm Warnings for New York

Well finally it looks lie it's a go for some decent snow and it's about time. At last check I think Binghamton, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse were all under winter storm warnings for a good part of tomorrow into Friday.

From reading around the general amounts seem to be in the 8 - 12 inch range and if it stalls a couple of cities could get more. Remember I'm clueless and with that in mind it's looking like Binghamton could may make out the best.

Rochester Still Throwing Snowballs at Buffalo

It looks like Rochester doesn't want any part of third place this season. Every time Buffalo moves up the snow hill The Rock just pushes them back down it. I think it's time for the cities to start doing a snow dance. I'll be doing one more before the snow season winds down for the fact that the golden snowball contest and the National snow contest are just a little too close for comfort. GO CUSE!!!!

Buffalo Slips into 2nd Place by A couple of Flakes

Since the last update here and I'm sorry about the lack of them Buffalo has slid past Rochester and is now in second place. Only a couple of tenths of an inch separate the two cities and the question is will one of them start piling up the snow to challenge Syracuse?

The New York snow race is still close with just a snow storm or two separating the top 3. A couple good lake effect snow events to the west of Syracuse could also put either Buffalo or Rochester on the top. Could this be the season that Da'Cuse goes down??? Still plenty of time left to see who ends up king of the snow hill.

Syracuse is Winning GSB But Losing Nationally

Syracuse still has a narrow snow lead here in the golden snowball contest buttt.... They just got bumped from the top spot in the national snow contest for snowiest big cities. With the last couple of storms in the Pa, Md and Dc states it was bound to happen. Syracuse and Rochester got smacked by a snowball or two to drop but Buffalo managed to hang on to their spot since the last update.

Just a Foot of Snow Separating the Top 3

I'm still loving how close the golden snowball contest is this season. Just a foot of snow give or take a little separates the top 3 cities. For those of you who follow the contest you know that's nothing.

Syracuse seems to add a little here and there each day but so does Rochester and Buffalo. I just wish that one of the bigger storms like the one that just hit the coast would start coming farther up north and more to the west so that we can have some fun too.

Rochester Slides into Second Place

It's about time we had some kind of change in the lineup. From the looks of it Rochester overtook Buffalo on the snow hill and now are in the number 2 spot. Go Rock!!! I did notice a drop for Buffalo's stats which could be either a mistake or an adjustment in the stats. Buffalo lost I think a tenth of an inch since I updated the stats at goldensnowglobe.com . Could be something new where NOAA takes away from the totals as the snow melts.

The good news is that as of the last reports from NOAA that would move Rochester up to second place in the national snow contest, Woooo Hoooo. Only by a couple of tenths of an inch though but Erie, Pa hasn't updated since around midnight compared to a 7:30 update for Rochester. I'm really liking that both of the snow races are still really close this late in the season and I like even more that ALl 3 of the GSB cities are in contention for the 1st place king of the hill and king of the mountain :) More to come later!

Eeny, Meeny, Miny Snow

I just took a look at the radar and the game eeny, meeny, miny, moe comes to mind when trying to figure out which city is going to make out the best in the next 24 hours or so :) Any Guesses???

Right now it looks like the winds have shifted around Buffalo and coming from more of a north - northwest flow right so in my opinion all 3 of the Big cities have a shot at piling up some good snow amounts with either Buffalo, Rochester or Syracuse getting a little extra over the others. If I were to guess and that's normally all I can do (remember I'm clueless) I would guess that the heavier bands are going to set up right between Rochester and Syracuse.

That said Buffalo added another 5+ inches to their totals since the last update so they have a shot at taking the lead if the Arctic air stays on more of a northern pattern. Again, remember the source. Me :( Either way it should get slick in all of the cities off and on and lets see if we can come up with a lead change.

Here in the Syracuse area a pretty good band went by this morning dropping around 2 inches in probably under an hour and most likely did the same for Buffalo and Rochester. IMO it's a toss of the coin as to which city will win this round of snowfall. Right now mostly sunny with the winds picking up ;)

Rain and 50 Degrees or Snow and 25 Degrees

Sorry about the lack of updates but there hasn't really been anything to update. All of the golden snowball cities are below their normal snowfall for this time in the season. The next few days hopefully will start things up again but for how long. Let's hope the rest of the snow season. Yesterday was a warm but rainy day which makes me ask,

Would you rather have a day like yesterday with a ton of rain and the temperature around 50 degrees or would you rather have the cold and snow? My opinion is that the weather yesterday was just to dark and gloomy for me. I'd rather have the white stuff falling myself.

Hey, how about DA'CUSE? Great game against Georgetown last night and a great season so far. GO CUSE!!!!!

Both snow contest stats have been updated as of this morning ;)

Stephen aka PSUSyr5 has been posting some fun forecasts on the Golden Snow Globe website It's all in fun and lets see if we can get some interaction. Here is what Stephen posted to get you all involved. You can pick an area in New York State or any other region in the United States. The idea IMO is to make it a hard one so we can stump the weather chump ;)

From PSUSyr5 - You’ve seen the Golden Snow Cast forecasts, but none of them have been for an area where you live. Or, perhaps there is a region out there that you’d like to see a forecast for, and the Golden SnowCast didn’t cover it. After all, there is only one World prediction in each Golden SnowCast forecast, so the chances of coverage for a specific area are quite small for a given time period. Or, maybe the Golden SnowCast did cover your area previously, but now you want more.

Say hello to Stump the Weather Chump. This is your chance to be a part of the forecasts. Just make a reply to this, or any Golden Snow Cast or Stump the Weather Chump post stating at least the region for which you would like a forecast. You can also mention what you would like in the forecast as well (temperature, precipitation, etc). I would like to keep the forecasts to 2-3 days ahead. Some forecasts may be general statements (at least half of the cities in the area will have temperatures 5 below average, all cities will have at least an inch of snow, etc) or involve a range (high temperatures 40-45, snow 1-3 inches, etc). That will mostly depend on what’s out there and the details given in the forecast request. So, basically, this will be like the Golden Snowcast forecast, except you control the forecast elements.

As with the Golden Snowcast, I’ll be keeping track of my progress (or lack there of) with this.

Rochester's Snowflakes are Adding Up

It's been kind of quiet the last few days but Rochester is slowly inching it's way back toward the top. They've taken 4 inches off of Syracuse's lead over them to be only 9 inches away from the lead and right now are less than a couple of inches away from reclaiming 2nd place in the Golden Snowball contest.

There is still a lot of Winter left and the race is a whole lot closer than it was at this time last season. In other words the golden snowball trophy is up for grabs for all of the GSB cities right now. Even Binghamton is staying close enough to the top to have a shot at the trophy.

I'm in the process of gathering the snow stats for the national contest and they will be posted later today. It should be interesting to see how the North East ends up this round.

Syracuse in a Two Way Tie for Snowiest US City

Syracuse just tied Fort Collins, Colorado for the snowiest big city in the United States. It gets even better though. Rochester and Buffalo are right behind them in the top 10. Go Cuse, Go Rock, Go Buffalo!!!!

The Golden Snowball Winter Prediction

It just dawned on me that I haven't done a winter forecast prediction yet here at goldensnowball.com . Maybe I'll get it up before the snow season is over. I suppose I could wait another couple months and really nail it down good huh? I'll do the research and try and put it up later tonight :) Obviously with most of the cities above normal right now you may think I will go that way. Could be ;)

Also, I just updated the national snow stats. You can check them out here. A little bit of shifting around in the top 10 snowiest cities but not a whole lot. All of the GSB cities survived the top 10 but it's definitely getting pretty close in that race also.

Forgetful Was My Middle Name Yesterday

OK! Nothing to do about snow right now but I was just thinking about how much was on my work plate yesterday. My mind was going in a zillion directions and then I got an email from my sister, older sister, way older sister that had this video. The reason I'm making the point of wayyyyyyyyyy older sister is because she put me about 3 years ahead of the age I really am on my last birthday which was just before the holidays. In other words Pay Back is a :0)

Anyways, yesterday I would go to do this and end up doing something else and forgetting what I was suppose to do in the first place. The video pretty much sums it up. Can anyone else relate to it???

Defending Snow Champ Syracuse Sleds into The Lead

Da Cuse is in the Igloo, err house. Syracuse has finally for the first time this season taken the lead in the Golden Snowball contest. You know it's a good snow race when Syracuse was near the bottom most of the season and at the bottom at one point. Can they hold on to the top spot til the finish. Nah! Not the way the season has been going so far. I expect several more lead changes :)

Buffalo isn't even close to throwing in the shovel yet and I don't think Rochester is either. Rochester was the big surprise with the weekend snowfall only posting about 6 1/2 inches but I'm sure they will be winning several rounds this season to keep it close. Even our neighbors to the South, Binghamton is still holding tough and post some snow just about every day now. I'm going to keep saying it! It's going to be a great snow race for the 2009 - 2010 season.

The Latest New York Storm Totals for a 1/2 & 1/3

5:30 PM New Snow Stats - Buffalo, Albany and Rochester's latest stats have just been posted at NOAA and Buffalo is looking pretty good with a 2 day total so far of 14.3 inches. Rochester and Albany didn't fair quite as good. At least not at the airports. Rochester is showing 2.6 for Sat & 3.5 so far today for a storm total of 6.1 inches. Albany shows just a couple of inches. Syracuse and Binghamton's stats just came out as I am typing and it's looking good for Syracuse with a 2 day storm total of 14.5 so far. Bingo is only reporting 1.4 inches.

Buffalo holds on to the King of the hill title and Syracuse jumps all the way up to second place while Binghamton who was in first place just yesterday drops all the way down to fourth. More to come because it's still snowing and the question is can Buffalo hold off DaCuse?

2 Day Storm Totals as of about 5 PM Sunday and still counting:

Syracuse - 14.5
Buffalo - 14.3
Rochester - 6.1
Albany - 2.0
Binghamton - 1.4

AND IT'S NOT OVER YET :)

Sunday 4:00 PM - Just went out and shoveled and if I were to do a guesstimate I would say about 15 inches so far since about midnight Saturday. Hopefully at least that at the airport. Probably about the same going on here today as Patrick from Rochester just posted in the comments. A steady light snow here in DaCuse. It keeps getting dark like it wants to fire up but then lightens up again. What's it doing in your area and thanks for the updates everyone? Depending on what the other US cities are doing we may be able to get all 3 of our cities in the top 10. I'm holding off for now on the update until most of the snow stops falling for the Goldensnowglobe website.

Noon Sunday - Awesome says it all! The stats were just updated but keep in mind that they were from late last night (around 1:00 am) for Syracuse, Binghamton and Albany. The stats for Buffalo and Rochester were as of about 5 - 5:30 am this morning. Buffalo has retaken the lead once again but can they stay King come the next update later today?

I'm going to give Syracuse the advantage right now for the fact that I shoveled about 6 inches around 3:00 am this morning and I just measured another 6 inches. So I would say Syracuse has at least another 10 inches to add as of right now. Just remember I'm always wrong ;) A good part of New York is still getting snow and should be for a good part of the day so hopefully we will have some decent numbers to post later on.

3:30 PM - Nothing in the Syracuse area but a few flakes. It does look like the snow up North is slowly trying to make it down to us though. Hopefully this won't be a bust like it was earlier in the week :( Buffalo and Rochester look like they may be getting some decent snow. Any snow coming down where you live right now?

There has been a few lead changes the last several days which can only mean one thing. This is an exciting snow race this season ;)

Yesterday we had two king of the snow hills! Buffalo overtook Rochester as king of the hill at one point by 1 tenth of an inch. Binghamton wasn't having any part of that though pushing Buffalo down the hill where they now sit in the middle of the hill planning their return to the top. Rochester sits at the #2 spot while the Syracusans are finally making up lost snow and are thinking maybe, just maybe they will be the King of the snow hill some time tomorrow. Rochester may throw a snowball or two into Syracuse's plans though.

Snow is in the forecast for all of the GSB cities for today and tomorrow. After looking at some of the forecasts I'm thinking it's either going to be The Rock or Da Cuse at the top come tomorrow night. Just remember it's me thinking that and I'm normally wrong ;) I'll be trying to throw in a few extra snow stat updates as they roll in and get posted on NOAA and remember Snow Means Slow. Take it slow that is unless your on a sled of course :)

I'm also going to try and update the national snow contest today. It should be interesting to see where Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse stand nationally after this weekend is over. I know Michigan has been getting some good snow along with a couple other states.

A Golden Snowball Snow Race to The Finish?

Gotta Love It! Less than 4 inches of snow separate 4 of the golden snowball cities heading into the New Year. I think this is probably the closest race going into January since the Golden Snowball contest started up again several years ago. The good thing is that snow is in the forecast for the next several days so it should get even more interesting to see which city wins this latest round. Some of the snow looked like it was hanging to the south so Binghamton may have a shot at making a move in the next update.

Looking at the stats from this time last season Syracuse was sledding to victory with an almost two foot lead over Buffalo and Rochester. Not this season! Syracuse still remains near the bottom but has slowly inched it's way back into the snow race. Just a few flakes of snow separate Buffalo from Rochester and like I mentioned, I'm loving it.

In the national snow contest none of the cities from New York are in the top 10. Both Rochester and Buffalo dropped out and Syracuse has been lucky just to even be in the contest. Syracuse did make a big jump though from 36th place to 25th and that's not counting the snow from the last day or two. Buffalo and Rochester are hanging right around the top 10 snowiest cities for this season but all of us have are work cut out for us. I'm still thinking that the cities to beat are going to be the us three along with Grand Rapids, Michigan, Erie, Pa and a few of the cities in Colorado. Don't forget though, I'm normally wrong ;)

Has The Snow God Been Dusted Off

Hopefully everyone had a fantastic Christmas! It's time to get back to work on the snow stats after a tiring but fun family break ; ) Keep an eye on the weather on Tuesday because it will be nasty driving in a lot of places.

OK, I hinted in a reply or two that I was curious if the Snow God has been awaken from his/her hibernation this season and it appears that that NYCO, the keeper of the Snow God completely forgot about him/her *cough* *cough*

That could explain the wimpy winter we've been having here in the Syracuse area and in CNY. The snow has been picking up a bit the last few days and it's looking to look more like winter this week than it has been looking so I can only assume the Snow God is all shined up and ready to let it rip. NYCO?. Lets just hope that the Snow God isn't too ticked off and decides to bury us the next few months. Hmmmm, or should we hope he/she is ticked :)

It's Buffalo by 1 snowflake over Rochester at the last look at the snow stats and that may be bouncing back and forth this week. Buffalo went from third place in the New York snow race to first and Binghamton dropped down to third place. I'm really not liking the way the top 3 seem to be separating themselves from the bottom 2 at this point but there is still a lot of snowfall to come. Look for more frequent updates from here on.

As for the national snow contest I really don't have a clue. Well maybe a clue but I haven't updated those stats in several days and there has been a lot of snow falling in some of the Northern US cities so that should be interesting once I update those stats a little later on.

The Snow Contest is Getting Closer

Sorry about the lack of updates all but it tis the season and with family in town it's going to be hit and miss. The snow stats for the 5 golden snowball cities have been updated and it's still looking to be a good snow race this season.

Syracuse finally got off the bottom of the snow hill with 4.6 inches being reported so far for yesterday. I think the strangest thing about the snow stats for Syracuse was that they actually set a daily date record with only 4.6 inches on December 23rd that dated all the way back to 1953. You would think that this far into the snow season it would take more than that to break a record wouldn't you?

Rochester is still hanging tough at the top but barely with Binghamton and Buffalo trying to close in. Albany is finally where they belong, at least for now.

I think the stats that stand out the most right now is that all of the GSB cities are behind last seasons stats and their normal stats for this time of the season. Syracuse is over 50 inches behind in snow compared to last year at this time with Rochester the only city staying close to normals. I'll try and sneak another update in before Christmas and maybe update a few cities in the national snow race but if not:

Rochester Skates to Their First Lead of The Snow Season

Rochester picked up just over half a foot of snow yesterday to jump to the King of the snow hill for the first time this season I believe. Most of the season they have been hanging near the bottom of the hill with Syracuse who so far been the embarrassing snowiest city of the 2009 - 1010 snow season.

Binghamton piled up just enough snow to stay ahead of Buffalo with Buffalo dropping down to the number 3 spot. Albany stays ahead of Syracuse, Bwaaa, Haaa, Haaa, Ha (Evil Laugh). It will be interesting to see when I do the stats for the national snow race if Rochester can make it to the top 10 and if Buffalo will remain there. Lets just hope that one of the NY State cities can win the nationals. Is this the season Syracuse goes down in defeat????

Binghamton Ahead by A Snowflake

Lots of changes in the snow race the last day and most likely there will be more by the time the nights over.

Binghamton has retaken the lead from Buffalo by only a tenth on an inch of snow. Rochester moved up to 3rd place passing Albany and they are hot on the snow trail of Binghamton and Buffalo now. Syracuse finally hit the 5 inch mark, lmao! Enough said about Syracuse. The lake effect machines are still at work up north and supposedly the band is suppose to drop south. We'll see what happens with that. Maybe a late night update depending on how the snow blows tonight.

Snowiest US Cities at Golden Snow Globe

There isn't a whole lot going on right now in the Golden Snowball contest so I had a chance to put together some stats at the snowiest big city in the US site, the Golden Snow Globe award

The cities from New York are still pretty far behind some of the other cities from other states. Buffalo is carrying New York so far rounding out the top 10 at number 10 on the list. At least that is where I have them right now but most likely there are probably a few cities in Colorado that I still haven't been able to locate the stats for so that should change. Rochester is next for NY at 21st place. Syracuse is, is, well Syracuse is at #31 on the list that I have so far. Pretty sad if you ask me that we are all getting whooped halfway through December as bad as we are.

Colorado is definitely the Boss state right now as far as the snow contest goes. Grand Rapids has been getting hit good a couple of time and are in 4th place. Wisconsin has a couple of cities in there, Madison and Green Bay. Colorado has been quiet for a few days now and some of the other cities are taking advantage of them but still have a ways to go.

I wasn't expecting this big of a lead by any of the US cities this early on but of course Mother Nature does her own thing. I thought Erie, Pa be right right up there and they probably will be sooner or later. They just started to pile up some snow totals so I think it's going to go down to the last snowflake.

Syracuse has almost a 4 foot gap to make up in order to claim the snowiest city pop 100,000 in the country so we best start turning it on now. Hopefully with some snow in the forecast the next couple of days one of the New York cities will gain some snow on the other cities. Check out the new US snow stats at

I was afraid to check the stats this evening because every time I checked the radar earlier it looked like Buffalo was getting the lake effect snow. Buffalo pushes Binghamton out of the short lived top spot that they held which also drops Albany down to 3rd place.

Rochester got in on the action and blasted Syracuse with a snowball or two to know them back to last place. I think the question is are Buffalo and Rochester done with this last blast of snow yet? Nothing but a few flakes in the Syracuse area with most of the decent snow hanging up north or to the south of us. I was hoping with the strong winds today we may have been able to steal a little bit of snow from Buffalo's Lake Erie but it didn't quite reach us.

It's looking like Tug Hill Tina and other people up North of Syracuse should be happy (or not) because it looks like they are in the thick of the lake effect. South of Buffalo looks to be getting decent amounts of snow also. I have a feeling Buffalo and Rochester may be in the number 1 and 2 slot sometime tomorrow. All I can do is sit here and shake my head at the pitiful 4 inches that Syracuse is showing. Of course I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that don't mind it a bit.

Buh, Bye Buffalo Hello Binghamton

I am so loving this!!! The unlikely two cities fighting for king of the snow hill. When I took a look at the stats I saw Buffalo didn't get much and I thought Syracuse would jump into 3rd place. Man was I wrong. Took a look at Binghamton and Albany, yes Albany who I try not to even mention and was surprised to see those cities ahead of Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse.

Binghamton wasn't too much of a surprise, at least not this early into the season but to have Albany in 2nd place less than an inch out of 1st..... Both broke date records for snowfall with Albany picking up 7.3 inches and Bingo grabbing 6.4 to drop Buffalo down to 3rd place.

Rochester slips and slides down to the dreaded dead last spot in the Golden Snowball contest. Syracuse moves from the bottom of the hill to the number 4 spot. All in all it's a good start to what should be a fun contest this season. I'll have to look back but I don't remember Albany ever being this close 1st place this time in the season but I could be wrong. Remember it's me and I normally am. I think this week will continue to be interesting with more changes in the line up.

Syracuse ends it's streak of 287 days without at least an inch of snow falling. A record that I can't see being touched for a long time and to that record I say seeee ya and let the snow games begin. Again!

Buffalo Continues to Pad Their Snow Totals

Go Buffalo! Although they have just about half of the snow that they normally have about this time of the year they are sneaking in an inch here and there to build on their lead. They may be able to catch last years totals by the end of the week. Albany is the only city above last years totals and all of the other GSB cities are pretty far behind both their average snow for this time in the season and last years totals.

Syracuse is over a foot behind their normals and almost a couple feet behind last seasons snow stats. Both Binghamton and Rochester are lacking around a foot of snow compared to last year at this time. What's this all mean? To be honest, not a thing. This is the great northeast and things can change in the blink of an eye. That blink of an eye may see some changes starting tonight and lasting at least a few days.

I'm seeing snow in the forecast that ranges anywheres from and inch or two to 2 - 4 and up. I'm guessing that the temperatures could be playing a part in how much snow some of our Great cities get. If your a snow lover all we can do is hope that the lake effect machines are all tuned up now and ready to start cranking out some real snow. Some of the reports have the lake effect staying up north but I have a feeling that a shift down to the south may be in the work. Remember though that's just me and I'm normally clueless soooo.....

In the snowiest city in the US it's not looking to good for the New York cities right now. Some of the weather stations are mentioning the great snow state of Colorado again and their not talking inches but feet again. Their is a good chance that some of the big cities may be getting a couple more feet of snow to add onto their already impressive leads. The big 3 cities in New York may have about 5 feet or more to catch up on in order to win the first ever Golden Snow Globe Award. I think it will be exciting right to the finish for both contests. More to come later.

Albany Slips Past Syracuse and Rochester

Please say it isn't so!!! Well it is so and Albany has slipped past Rochester and Syracuse with that storm that came through over the weekend. The cool part of it is that Syracuse is in dead last for the Golden Snowball award this season with Rochester trying to snowball fight it's way from falling into last place.

How long will Albany remain out of last place? Probably not too long with snow in the forecast for the next few days and Wednesday could get interesting for all of the GSB cities if it's cold enough.

One other thing I noticed is that Syracuse lost .2 inches of snow in the stats the last day or two. Give it back I say to NOAA. Don't get me wrong. The people at NOAA rock with all the stats they gather and post 3 times a day. Buffalo and Binghamton especially rock IMO ; ) the thing is Syracuse may need that at the end the way we are starting off here. Sometimes the National Weather Service does make a correction that it may have missed but I think too much time went by on this one. Most likely it was a mistake right around the 4th of December. Hmmmm! Ya know I'm getting desperate for snow when I am fighting for a couple tenths of an inch this early on :) Could be Daver trying to give Bingo the jump early on. I"m kidding of course Dave and we miss ya man ; )

The next couple of days as a matter of fact should be interesting for almost all of the cities in the US. I think I heard that with the system thats happening now most of the states may see some snow which should also make the Golden Snow Globe contest a PITA. I mean it should make it interesting. Tough enough trying to find snow stats for the normal snow cities over 100,000 but when I have to check out stats in cities like Texas all I can do is shake my head. It's a strange start to the snowy season to say the least.

Way to go Albany for passing DaCuse and The Rock and stay tuned for an interesting couple of days. No doubt there should be some shuffling around and we'll see if Buffalo can hold onto their lead.

I Think the Picture Says it All

Snow in Texas, Virginia, Maryland, Louisiana and the list goes on and on. The picture below pretty much says it all when it comes to most of the Golden Snowball cities :( As I was taking that picture about 10 minutes ago a few flakes did start to fall but the chances are it won't be adding up to anything. What stands out the most in the picture of the flowers is that here we are on December 5th and not only are there flowers on the plant but new buds just keep coming and coming.

I suppose it's kind of cool I guess but I think all the snow lovers would like to see them burried under a few feet of snow.

Time For The Buffalo Shuffle

First Lake Effect Warning of the season! After this event was first hyped up a few days ago the forecasts all but killed this down to a minimal event and now we have shifted back to a decent snowfall potential. Looking at 5-10 inches for the Buffalo Metro tomorrow which would give us a great lead for the dismal winter we have all been suffering thus far. I'm hoping this turns into one of those mis-forested lake storms that just unleashes on us. Well only reason I am crossing my fingers for that is because I have off tomorrow and don't have to drive in it. So I say LET IT SNOW!

Buffalo Skates into the Lead

LATE NIGHT - The stats are posted and are now official. Buffalo has the first lead change of the season bumping Binghamton down to second place. Go Buffalo!!!

Earlier - The General (from Buffalo) and ZR800 (Rochester) both reported that the snow was falling this morning and it's about time that both of those cities finally get on the snow board. WTG!

Buffalo is doing it in style by most likely jumping right into the lead for the first time this season. After reading around it's looking like they have started their snow season on December 1st with 5.8 inches of snow. That's what it is looking like according to some unofficial stats that NOAA does have up. The official stats should be out later. Most likely Buffalo will also be in the top 10 in the new contest of snowiest cities in the US. That is at least until I find all of the snow stats for the US cities with a population of 100,000 or more.

Rochester it looks like will be on the snow board when the official stats come out later also. 1.6 inches which is enough for them to pass Syracuse I believe and take over the 3rd place spot. Both Buffalo and Rochester stats were as of 7:00 am this morning so the snow stats may go up if any other snow fell since then.

Binghamton along with DaCuse probably have nothing to show but maybe a trace to a couple of tenths of snow. The snow was all around here but I think it may have stayed a bit further to the north and west of both cities. Look for the official totals a little later.

Steven put out another forecast for a couple of areas on the new site at goldensnowglobe.com. He did a great job IMO with his first snow cast only missing by one city which was Bingo.
